Multilayer electroactive polymer films actuate a small hand-held device that can display tool tip forces during MR-guided interventions. The display produces localized skin stretch at the thumb and index fingertips. Tests confirm that the device does not significantly affect MR imaging and produces detectable stimuli in response to forces measured by a biopsy needle instrumented with optical fibers. Tests with human subjects explored robotic and teleoperated paradigms to detect when the needle contacted a membrane embedded at variable depth in a tissue phantom that approximated the properties of porcine liver. In the first case, naive users detected membranes with a 98.9% success rate as the needle was driven at fixed speed. In the second case, users with experience in needle-based procedures controlled the needle insertion and detected membranes embedded in tissue phantoms with a 98% success rate. In the second experiment, some users detected membranes with very light contact forces, but there was greater subject-to-subject variation.

The need for accurate and simultaneous diagnosis of multiple respiratory infectious diseases has become increasingly critical due to ongoing viral mutations and the similarity of symptoms among various viruses. Here, we have advanced our detection capabilities by developing a multiplex lateral flow immunoassay (LFA) platform that integrates oligonucleotides and antibodies, enabling the simultaneous detection of five respiratory viruses: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), Influenza A (FluA), Influenza B (FluB), Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and Adenovirus (ADV), on a single membrane. By applying the oligonucleotide and antibody-conjugated AuNPs, the platform enables highly sensitive and specific detection.

Waveguide evanescent field fluorescence microscopy (WEFF) is an evanescent-based microscopy that utilizes a confined thin film of light, around 100 nm, to image the plasma membrane of cells attached to a waveguide. Low photobleaching and low background besides its high axial resolution allows time-lapse imaging to investigate changes in cell morphology in the presence or absence of chemical agents. Both large field of view (FOV) and uniform illumination are very important while imaging cell-substrate contacts with an evanescent field.

Moiré superlattices, created by stacking different van der Waals materials at twist angles, have emerged as a versatile platform for exploring intriguing phenomena such as topological properties, superconductivity, the quantum anomalous Hall effect, and the unconventional Stark effect. Additionally, the formation of moiré superlattice potential can generate spontaneous symmetry breaking, leading to an anisotropic optical response and electronic transport behavior.
