Ultrasound imaging has indications across many areas of medicine, but the need for training and the variability in skill and acquired image quality among 2-D ultrasound users have limited its wider adoption and utilization. Low-cost volumetric ultrasound with a known frame of reference has the potential to lower these operator-dependent barriers and enhance the clinical utility of ultrasound imaging. In this paper, we improve upon our previous research-scanner-based prototype to implement a versatile volumetric imaging platform for existing clinical 2-D ultrasound systems. We present improved data acquisition and image reconstruction schemes to increase quality, streamline workflow, and provide real-time visual feedback. We present initial results using the platform on a Vimedix simulator, as well as on phantom and in vivo targets using a variety of clinical ultrasound systems and probes.

A long-standing goal of neuroimaging is the non-invasive volumetric assessment of whole brain function and structure at high spatial and temporal resolutions. Functional ultrasound (fUS) and ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) are rapidly emerging techniques that promise to bring advanced brain imaging and therapy to the clinic with the safety and low-cost advantages associated with ultrasound. fUS has been used to study cerebral hemodynamics at high temporal resolutions while ULM has been used to study cerebral microvascular structure at high spatial resolutions.

The most common transducers used to generate ultrasound in medical applications are based on short electrical pulses applied to piezoelectric transducers and capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers. However, piezoelectric transducers have a limited frequency bandwidth, defined by their physical thickness, and capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers have poor transmission efficiency. The high frequency cutoff limits the spatial resolution of ultrasonic images.

Quantification of cyanobacterial CO fixation rates is vital to determining their potential as industrial strains in a circular bioeconomy. Currently, however, CO fixation rates are most often determined through indirect and/or low-resolution methods, resulting in an incomplete picture of both dynamic behaviors and total carbon fixation potential. To address this, we developed the "Automated Carbon and CO Experimental Sampling System" (ACCESS); a low-cost system for in situ off-gas analysis that supports the automated acquisition of high-resolution volumetric CO uptake rates from multiple cyanobacterial cultures in parallel.
