Interceptive timing is a fundamental ability underpinning numerous actions (e.g., ball catching), but its development and relationship with other cognitive functions remain poorly understood. Piaget suggested that children need to learn the physical rules that govern their environment before they can represent abstract concepts such as number and time. Thus, learning how objects move in space and time may underpin the development of related abstract representations (i.e., mathematics). To test this hypothesis, we captured objective measures of interceptive timing in 309 primary school children (5-11 years old), alongside scores for general motor skill and national standardized academic attainment. Bayesian estimation showed that interceptive timing (but not general motor capability) uniquely predicted mathematical ability even after we controlled for age, reading, and writing attainment. This finding demonstrates that interceptive timing is distinct from other motor skills with specificity in predicting childhood mathematical ability independently of other forms of attainment and motor capability.

The present study sought to replicate two non-intuitive effects reported in the literature on lateral manual interception of uniformly moving targets, the angle-of-approach (AoA) effect and the reversal-movement (RM) effect. Both entail an influence of the target trajectory's incidence angle on the observed interceptive hand movements along the interception axis; they differ in the interception location considered. The AoA effect concerns all trajectory conditions requiring hand movement to allow successful interception, while the RM effect concerns the particular condition where the target will in fact arrive at the hand's initial position and no hand movement is therefore required but nevertheless regularly produced.

Varroa destructor is one of the greatest threats to Apis mellifera worldwide and if left untreated will kill a colony in less than three years. A Varroa-resistant population from Gotland, Sweden, has managed to survive for 25 years with little to no Varroa treatment by reducing the mite's reproductive success. The underlying mechanisms of this trait is currently not known, though previous research indicates that it is the honey bee brood, and not adult bee influence, that contributes to this phenotype.

This chapter will discuss the orthodontic perspective of extractions of compromised first permanent molars (cFPMs) due to hypomineralisation. The context behind the diagnosis of a poor prognosis of cFPM that would support the planning of extractions will be presented. In addition, the ideal timing for interceptive extraction of cFPM as well as the favorable and unfavorable orthodontic scenarios for extractions in the permanent dentition will be discussed.

Introduction: Diagnostic criteria for Parkinson's disease (PD) rely on clinical, mainly motor, features, implying that pre-motor phase cannot be accurately identified. To achieve a reliable early diagnosis, similar to what has been done for Alzheimer's disease (AD), a shift from clinical to biological identification of PD is being pursued. This shift has taken great advantage from the research on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers as they mirror the ongoing molecular pathogenic mechanisms taking place in PD, thus intercepting the disease timely with respect to clinical manifestations.
