Calixarene-functionalized luminescent nanoparticles were successfully fabricated for the FRET-based selective and sensitive detection of the organophosphorus pesticide glyphosate (GP). p-Tert-butylcalix[4]arene was grafted on the surface of [Ru(bpy) ] incorporated SiNps to produce self-assembled nanosensors (RSC). FRET was switched on in the presence of GP by means of energy transfer due to binding with p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene grafted on the surface of the RSC. The FRET efficiency of the GP-RSC system was increased gradually with the addition of GP. The FRET efficiency was evaluated as 87.69 % and a high binding affinity was established by the binding constant value, 1.16×10 M , using a Langmuir binding isotherm plot. The estimated limit of detection (LOD) was 7.91×10 M, which was lower than the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommendation. The probe also effectively responds to real sample analysis. The sensitivity and selectivity was realized due to the efficient FRET towards the fluorescence properties of the [Ru(bpy) ] complex.

The separation of aromatic contaminants from sugar-aromatic aqueous mixtures is required in second-generation biorefineries because aromatic compounds deactivate (bio)catalysts typically involved in upgrading lignocellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals. This separation remains challenging, however, because of the degree of molecular recognition needed to sequester dilute aromatic impurities from concentrated sugar streams. Herein, we demonstrate that hydrophobic cavities of p- tert-butylcalix[4]arene macrocycles grafted on amorphous silica (calix/SiO) perform this separation selectively and efficiently by acting as selective molecular hosts that adsorb aromatic compounds (5-hydroxymethylfurfural, vanillin, and vanillic acid) while excluding monomeric sugar (glucose chosen as a prototypical model) in aqueous mixtures.

Calixarene framework functionalized bio-polymeric magnetic composites (MSp-TDI-calix) were synthesized and utilized as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) sorbent for the extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), namely indoprofen (INP), ketoprofen (KTP), ibuprofen (IBP) and fenoprofen (FNP), from environmental water samples. MSp-TDI-calix was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, EDX, VSM and BET analysis, and the results were compared with Sp-TDI and Sp-TDI-calix. To maximize the extraction performance of MSp-TDI-calix decisive MSPE affective parameters such as sorbent amount, extraction time, sample volume, type of organic eluent, volume of organic eluent, desorption time and pH were comprehensively optimized prior to HPLC-DAD determination.

Magnetic nanocomposites adorned with calixarene were successfully prepared by immobilizing diethanolamine functionalized -butylcalix[4]arene (DEA-Calix) onto silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The synthesis, surface morphology, purity, elemental composition and thermal stability of newly prepared nanocomposites were analyzed using FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Magnetic solid-phase adsorption (MSPA) was employed to explore the adsorption behavior of DEA-Calix-MNPs towards Pb(II) from water samples prior to its flame atomic absorption spectrometric analysis.

The two new p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene derivatives described here bear one or two nalidixic acid arms linked to the lower calixarene rim via the quinolone carboxylate moiety. These derivatives were synthesized in order to investigate two important features of molecules conceived as potential antibiotics, namely, metal cation complexation and interfacial properties, and the way in which they interrelate. The properties of the calixarene derivatives were studied in monomolecular films spread on pure water and on aqueous subphases containing biologically relevant mono- and divalent metal cations.
