Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of montelukast versus a placebo in helping outpatients with mild to moderate COVID-19 recover from symptoms more quickly.
  • The trial included 1,250 participants over 30 years old with confirmed COVID-19 symptoms for less than a week, who were randomly assigned to receive either montelukast or a placebo for 14 days.
  • Results showed no significant difference in recovery time between the montelukast and placebo groups, with both groups having a median recovery time of 10 days and no reported deaths.

Background: Deprescribing of antihypertensive medications is recommended for some older patients with low blood pressure and frailty. The OPTiMISE trial showed that this deprescribing can be achieved with no differences in blood pressure control at 3 months compared with usual care. We aimed to examine effects of deprescribing on longer-term hospitalisation and mortality.

Incident stroke in individuals with peripartum cardiomyopathy.

Am Heart J

September 2024

Department of Cardiology, Smidt Heart Institute, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA. Electronic address:

Background: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM), a form of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) that occurs during the final month of pregnancy through the first 5 months postpartum, is associated with heightened risk for maternal morbidity and mortality. Stroke is a common complication of HFrEF but there is limited data on the incidence of stroke in PPCM.

Methods: Using statewide, nonfederal administrative data from 2000 to 2015, we analyzed age-adjusted risk of stroke within 3 years after PPCM-associated pregnancies.

Background: Although psychiatric disorders have been associated with reduced immune responses to other vaccines, it remains unknown whether they influence COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE). This study evaluated risk of COVID-19 hospitalization and estimated mRNA VE stratified by psychiatric disorder status.

Methods: In a retrospective cohort analysis of the VISION Network in four US states, the rate of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19-associated hospitalization between December 2021 and August 2022 was compared across psychiatric diagnoses and by monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccination status using Cox proportional hazards regression.
