Challenges Faced by Patients Undergoing Fecal Ostomy Surgery: A Qualitative Study of Colorectal Cancer Patient Perspectives.

J Gastrointest Surg

January 2025

Ariadne Labs, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard. T.H. School of Public Health, Boston, MA, 02115; Department of Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, 02114; Mongan Institute Center for Aging and Serious Illness, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, 02114. Electronic address:

Background: Ostomy education and support is instrumental in surgical recovery and adaptation. We aimed to evaluate 1) challenges faced by fecal ostomy patients with colorectal cancer and 2) resources necessary for recovery.

Methods: We recruited patients 21-90 days after scheduled fecal ostomy surgery for locally advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer from a single, tertiary academic center.

Anxiety disorders are one of the top contributors to psychiatric burden worldwide. Recent years have seen a dramatic rise in the potential anxiolytic properties ascribed to cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating constituent of the Cannabis Sativa plant. This has led to several clinical trials underway to examine the therapeutic potential of CBD for anxiety disorders.

Emotional stress increases GluA2 expression and potentiates fear memory via adenylyl cyclase 5.

Cell Rep

January 2025

Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, LSUHSC, New Orleans, LA 70112, USA; Southeast Louisiana VA Healthcare System, New Orleans, LA 70119, USA. Electronic address:

Stress can alter behavior and contributes to psychiatric disorders by regulating the expression of the GluA2 AMPA receptor subunit. We have previously shown in mice that exposure to predator odor stress elevates GluA2 transcription in cerebellar molecular layer interneurons (MLIs), and MLI activity is required for fear memory consolidation. Here, we identified the critical involvement of adenylyl cyclase 5, in both the stress-induced increase in GluA2 in MLIs and the enhancement of fear memory.

G protein-coupled receptor 139 (GPR139), a highly conserved orphan receptor, is predominantly expressed in the habenula of vertebrate species. Habenula is an ancient epithalamic structure, which is critical to comprehending adaptive behaviors in vertebrates. We have previously demonstrated the role of GPR139 agonists in fear-associated decision-making processes in zebrafish.

Like vertebrate animals, some invertebrates have been shown to exhibit fear- or anxiety-like behavior while in apparatus that allow choice between sheltered, darkened spaces and open, lit spaces. The behavioral mechanisms by which invertebrates accomplish this behavior, and whether those mechanisms are similar across species, has not been fully studied. Across three experiments, we investigated possible behaviors that Great Ramshorn snails (Planorbarius corneus) could use to accomplish fear behavior while in presence of the odor of a predatory fish.
