When building artificial nanochannels, having a scalable robust platform with controlled morphology is important, as well as having the option for final functionalization of the channels for the selective transport of water and proteins. We have previously developed asymmetric membranes that have a surface layer of very sharp pore size distribution, surface charge and pore functionalization. Here, a more complex bioinspired platform is reported. Hierarchical isotropic porous structures with spherical micrometer-sized cavities, interconnected by hexagonally ordered nanochannels, were prepared based on the phase separation of polystyrene-b-poly(t-butyl acrylate) block copolymers, following a nucleation and growth mechanism. The structure was imaged by scanning electron microscopy, which demonstrated a high density of ordered nanochannels. The hexagonal order formed by the self-assembly in solution was confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering. The structure evolution was investigated by time-resolved grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering. The assembled hydrophobic hierarchical structure was then converted to a hydrophilic structure by acid hydrolysis, leading to nanochannels covered by carboxylic groups and therefore convenient for water transport.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) with mechanical strength and reduced flammability may also enable next-generation Li batteries with higher energy densities. However, conventional SPEs have fundamental limitations in terms of Li conductivity. While an imidazole functionalized polymer (PMS-Im) has been previously shown to have ionic conductivity related to the imidazole-Li coordination, herein we demonstrate that quaternization of this polymer to form an analogous imidazolium functionalized polymer (PMS-Im) more efficiently solvates lithium salts and plasticizes the polymer.

Artificial ionic nanochannels with light perception capabilities hold promise for creating ionic devices. Nevertheless, most research primarily focuses on regulating single nanochannels, leaving the cumulative effect of numerous nanochannels and their integration underexplored. We herein develop a biomimetic photoreceptor based on photoresponsive highly aligned nanochannels (pHANCs), which exhibit uniform channel heights, phototunable surface properties, and excellent compatibility with microfabrication techniques, enabling the scalable fabrication and integration into functional ionic devices.

Hybrid nanoplasmonic structures composed of subwavelength apertures in metallic films and nanoparticles have recently been demonstrated as ultrasensitive plasmonic sensors. This work investigates the electrokinetically driven propagation of the assembly mechanism of the metallic nanoparticles through nanoapertures. The Debye-Hückel approximation for a symmetric electrolyte solution with overlapping electrical double layers (EDLs) is used to obtain an analytical solution to the problem.

Water-based nanofluidic devices, where water is confined in Angstrom scale nanochannels, are widely encountered in nanotechnology. Although it is known that the material of confinement has a significant influence on the properties of confined water, much less is known of the relationship between the structure of nanoconfined water and its properties, impacting the design of nanofluidic devices. We explore the behavior of a confined water monolayer within a bilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS) structure, comparing its behavior with that within bilayer graphene.
