A nitrogen-fixing, endospore-forming bacterium, designated strain L201 was isolated from the leaves of Bryophyllum pinnatum growing in South China Agricultural University. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain L201 is affiliated with the genus Paenibacillus, and closely related to Paenibacillus albidus Q4-3 (97.4%), Paenibacillus odorifer DSM 15391 (97.3%) and Paenibacillus borealis DSM 13188 (97.2%). The main fatty acids components was anteiso-C (48.1%). The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The major polar lipids were found to be diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The G+C content of strain L201 was 43.9%. DNA-DNA relatedness between L201 and the reference strain was 29.8%. Biological and biochemical tests, protein patterns, genomic DNA fingerprinting and comparison of cellular fatty acids distinguished strain L201 from the closely related Paenibacillus species. Based on these data, the novel species Paenibacillus bryophyllum sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain L201(= KCTC 33951 = GDMCC 1.1251 ).

A synthetic strain of ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) was developed by introducing genes for long duration of fertility to be used as mother of mule ducklings and a seven-generation selection experiment was conducted to increase the number of fertile eggs after a single artificial insemination (AI) with pooled Muscovy semen. Reciprocal crossbreeding between Brown Tsaiya LRI-2 (with long duration of fertility) and Pekin L-201 (with white plumage mule ducklings) ducks produced the G0. Then G1 were intercrossed to produce G2 and so on for the following generations.

It has been shown previously that an avirulent Semliki Forest virus (SFV) clone, rA774, engineered to carry the nsP3 gene of the virulent clone SFV4 becomes highly neurovirulent and is lethal for adult BALB/c mice. rA774, like several other alphaviruses, has an opal termination codon close to the 5' end of nsP3 (aa 469), while SFV4 has an arginine residue at this position. Mutation of the opal codon to an arginine residue increases the virulence of rA774 but does not reconstruct the severe neurovirulence of SFV4.

To investigate the bioelectric properties on one of the cell types that line the distal lung unit, we isolated type II alveolar epithelium from 18- to 20-day gestation fetal rats (term = 22 days) and grew them on collagen-coated nitrocellulose filters. Amiloride impaired ion transport in a dose-dependent fashion (10(-4) to 10(-6) M) with 10(-4) M decreasing potential difference (PD) (mean +/- SE, 2.0 +/- 0.
