Research involving dietary supplement interventions for sarcopenia and osteopenia in type 1 diabetes patients is scarce. Here we present a case study of a type 1 diabetic patient that was treated with supplemental alpha-hydroxy-isocaproic acid (α-HICA) for 120 days. Several measures of body composition by dual x-ray absorptiometry, blood markers, and maximum voluntary contraction parameters were assessed at baseline and after 120 days. The patient's baseline weight was 73.2 kg, which increased to 75.2 kg by the 120-day assessment. Salient mass distribution changes included increases of trunk fat mass (+0.4 kg), trunk fat free mass (+0.2 kg), total trunk mass (+0.2 kg), and a decrease of 8 percent in trunk fat mass contribution. Handgrip strength increased by 58.84 N, whereas isometric force in the leg press decreased by 347.15 N. Amelioration of BMD Z-scores from -0.7 to 0.5 and T-scores from -1.0 to -0.9 were noted. Importantly, full hematologic measures and weekly nutritional counselling assessments revealed no signs of adverse effects with α-HICA supplementation. Due to the imperative of maintaining FFM, strength and bone mass in these patients, additional research is necessary to confirm these promising results and to clarify whether leucine and/or one of its derivatives might be clinically useful.

Radiomics and Deep Learning Model for Benign and Malignant Soft Tissue Tumors Differentiation of Extremities and Trunk.

Acad Radiol

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Southeast University Zhongda Hospital, No. 87 Dingjiaqiao Road, Gulou District, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China (M.Y., J.J.). Electronic address:

Rationale And Objectives: To develop radiomics and deep learning models for differentiating malignant and benign soft tissue tumors (STTs) preoperatively based on fat saturation T2-weighted imaging (FS-T2WI) of patients.

Materials And Methods: Data of 115 patients with STTs of extremities and trunk were collected from our hospital as the training set, and data of other 70 patients were collected from another center as the external validation set. Outlined Regions of interest included the intratumor and the peritumor region extending outward by 5 mm, then the corresponding radiomics features were extracted respectively.

Objective: The objective of this study was to analyse the association between body composition and changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients followed for hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: Longitudinal data from the Knee and Hip OsteoArthritis Long-term Assessments (KHOALA) cohort, a multicentre cohort of 878 patients with symptomatic knee and/or hip OA, were used. The main outcome criteria were changes in patient-reported outcomes measures, the Study Short Form-36 (physical functioning, pain, mental health and vitality) and the OsteoArthritis Knee and Hip Quality Of Life (OAKHQOL)(physical activity, pain and mental health).

Background: To investigate the joint associations between various body fat distribution parameters and high blood pressure (HBP) using the Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) model in school-aged children.

Methods: A diverse sample of 7 ∼ 17 years old (N = 1423; 50.25% boys) was recruited for this study.

Successful Multi-Modal Laser Intervention and Histopathological Evaluation of Multiple Glomangiomas.

Lasers Surg Med

December 2024

Department of Dermatology, Veterans Health Administration, San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Objectives: Glomangiomas are benign vascular malformations that exist within the spectrum of glomuvenous malformations which consist of varying amounts of glomus cells, vascular spaces, and smooth muscle. Glomangiomas are often treated due to associated pain, particularly when located on pressure areas such as the back or extensor surfaces, which can cause difficulty with certain activities and occupational functions. Histologically glomangiomas consist of prominent dilated vascular spaces lined by glomus cells typically situated in the deep-dermis to subcutaneous fat which limits treatment to modalities capable of reaching the depth of the tumor including excision, sclerotherapy, and laser therapy.

Introduction: Obesity is a growing public health issue, especially among young adults, with long-term management strategies still under debate. This prospective study compares the effects of caloric restriction and isocaloric diets with different macronutrient distributions on body composition and anthropometric parameters in obese women during a 12-week weight loss program, aiming to identify the most effective dietary strategies for managing obesity-related health outcomes.

Methods: A certified clinical nutritionist assigned specific diets over a 12-week period to 150 participants, distributed as follows: hypocaloric diets-low-energy diet (LED, 31 subjects) and very low-energy diet (VLED, 13 subjects); isocaloric diets with macronutrient distribution-low-carbohydrate diet (LCD, 48 subjects), ketogenic diet (KD, 23 subjects), and high-protein diet (HPD, 24 subjects); and isocaloric diet without macronutrient distribution-time-restricted eating (TRE, 11 subjects).
