Issue Addressed: Antiobesity campaigns may inadvertently stigmatise individuals with obesity via the use of images that portray negative obesity stereotypes. This study investigated the impact of images on weight stigma using mock antiobesity campaigns featuring different types of images.
Methods: Participants (N = 240) were randomly assigned to one of four campaign conditions: stereotypical images, counter-stereotypical images, neutral images, or no images. All four conditions used the same nonstigmatising message text. Participants indicated their attitudes towards being in social situations (desired social distance) with the target featured in the images, or individuals with obesity (no images), rated the target or individuals with obesity on various traits, and indicated to what extent the campaign was motivating and stigmatising.
Results: Analysis of variance revealed that the stereotypical images were rated as the most stigmatising and were also associated with higher negative and lower positive trait ratings of the target and more desired social distance from the target. Neutral images generally produced the least weight stigma.
Conclusion: It is important to consider the impact of antiobesity campaign images that depict common obesity stereotypes. Developing, testing and disseminating nonstigmatising campaigns is important to reduce stigma and better engage individuals with antiobesity public health messages. SO WHAT?: Weight stigma has negative consequences for physical and psychological health, which may undermine obesity intervention efforts. Stereotypical images that blame individuals for their weight reinforce obesity stigma and are likely to be in-effective in increasing healthier behaviour and reducing obesity. The development of effective antiobesity campaigns should be a public health priority.

This study investigates changes in the distribution of body mass for adult Australians between 1995 and 2017/18. Using three nationally representative health surveys, we first apply the parametric generalised entropy (GE) class of inequality indices to measure the level of disparity in the body mass distribution. Results from the GE measure reveal that, while growth of body mass inequality is a population-wide experience, demographic and socio-economic factors explain only a modest portion of total inequality.

Objective: Given the increased prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) among individuals higher on the weight spectrum, we aimed to 1) report the prevalence of ED patients in higher levels of care (residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient) attributing the onset of their ED to anti-obesity messaging, 2) report the most commonly recollected sources of those messages, and 3) determine if those attributing the onset of their ED to anti-obesity messaging a) enter, b) exit, and c) respond to treatment differently from peers who did not.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from 2901 patients receiving ED treatment in higher levels of care at a US-based center between 2015 and 2018. Multilevel models examined differences in ED symptoms and trajectories of change over time.
African American women, in particular, have learned to navigate through a food consumption landscape that purposefully, and often aggressively, limits their choices and stigmatizes their resulting physical appearance, and renders them collectively unattractive and unworthy. While American women are challenged to subscribe to traditional slim body standards, a faction of Americans have differing opinions. African American (AA) women celebrate larger body types and defy weight stigma.

We conducted three experimental studies (total = 1281) that compared traditional weight-loss messages to weight-neutral messages (Study 1), weight-inclusive messages (Study 2) and size acceptance messages (Study 3). Results revealed that public health messages have differential effects on health behaviours and well-being, depending on the audience's BMI or perceived weight.
