Ascoviruses are circular double-stranded DNA viruses that infect insects. Herein we sequenced and analyzed the genome of the previously unrecorded ascovirus isolate Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3i (HvAV-3i). The genome size is 185,650 bp with 181 hypothetical open reading frames (ORFs). Additionally, definition based on ascovirus repeated ORFs (aros) is proposed; whereby the 29 aros from all sequenced Ascoviridae genomes are divided into six distinct groups. The topological relationship among the isolates of Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3a is (HvAV-3f, {HvAV-3h, [HvAV-3e, (HvAV-3g, HvAV-3i)]}) with every clade well supported by a Bayesian posterior probability of 1.00 and a Bootstrap value of 100%.

The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are a superfamily of membrane proteins. These active transporters are involved in the export of different substances such as xenobiotics. ABC transporters from subfamily C (ABCC) have also been described as functional receptors for different insecticidal proteins from (Bt) in several lepidopteran species.

Premise: Glandular trichomes are implicated in direct and indirect defense of plants. However, the degree to which glandular and non-glandular trichomes have evolved as a consequence of herbivory remains unclear, because their heritability, their association with herbivore resistance, their trade-offs with one another, and their association with other functions are rarely quantified.
Methods: We conducted a phylogenetic comparison of trichomes and herbivore resistance against the generalist caterpillar, Heliothis virescens, among tarweed species (Asteraceae: Madiinae) and a genetic correlation study comparing those same traits among maternal half-sibs of three tarweed species.

In insect antenna, following the activation of olfactory sensory neurons, odorant molecules are inactivated by enzymes in the sensillum lymph. How the inactivation products are cleared from the sensillum lymph is presently unknown. Here we studied the role of support cells (SCs) and the so-called sensory neuron membrane protein 2 (SNMP2), a member of the CD36 family of lipid transporters abundantly expressed in SCs, in sensillum lymph clearance processes in the moths Heliothis virescens and Bombyx mori.

Moth sex pheromones are a classical model for studying sexual selection. Females typically produce a species-specific pheromone blend that attracts males. Revealing the enzymes involved in the interspecific variation in blend composition is key for understanding the evolution of these sexual communication systems.
