Chemical energy can be recovered from municipal wastewater as biogas through anaerobic treatment. Effluent from direct anaerobic wastewater treatment at low temperatures, however, still contains ammonium and considerable amounts of dissolved methane. After nitritation, methane can be used as electron donor for denitrification by the anaerobic bacterium 'Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera'. It was shown that in the presence of 0.7% O denitrifying methanotrophic activity slightly increased and returned to its original level after oxygen had been removed. At 1.1% O, methane consumption rate increased 118%, nitrite consumption rate increased 58%. After removal of oxygen, methane consumption rate fully recovered, and nitrite consumption rate returned to 88%. Therefore, traces of oxygen that bacteria are likely to be exposed to in wastewater treatment are not expected to negatively affect the denitrifying methanotrophic process. 2.0% O inhibited denitrifying activity. Nitrite consumption rate decreased 60% and did not recover after removal of oxygen. No clear effect on methane consumption was observed. Further studies should evaluate if intermittent addition of oxygen results in increased growth rates of the slow-growing 'Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera'.

In the modern healthcare system, the rational allocation of emergency department (ED) resources is crucial for enhancing emergency response efficiency, ensuring patient safety, and improving the quality of medical services. This paper focuses on the issue of ED resource allocation and designs a priority sorting system for ED patients. The system classifies patients into two queues: urgent and routine.

This paper considers the event-triggered adaptive fault-tolerant control (FTC) problem for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems suffering from finite number of actuator failures and abrupt system external failure. Unlike existing event-triggered mechanisms (ETMs), this paper proposes an improved switching threshold mechanism (STM) that effectively addresses the potential system security hazards caused by large signal impulses when both the magnitude size of the controller and its rate of change are too large, while also saving energy consumption. Especially, when the occurrence of both actuator failure and system external failure may lead to over-change rate of the controller, by using the multi-dimensional Taylor network (MTN) approximation technique, the adaptive fault-tolerant control scheme designed based on the improved STM not only has lower resource consumption, but also indirectly improves the control performance of the system by ensuring the system security operation.

Background: While guidelines suggest administering antibiotics 12 to 18 hours after the rupture of membranes in term premature rupture of membranes (PROM) women, in practice, clinicians tend to initiate prophylactic antibiotics as soon as possible to avoid risk of infection.
Objective: This study aimed to assess whether early administration of prophylactic antibiotics for term premature rupture of membranes reduces the incidence of maternal and neonatal infections.
Study Design: This multi-center, prospective cohort study included women with term premature rupture of membranes.
Background: The effectiveness of tax increases in reducing tobacco consumption relies on the tobacco retailers and producers passing on increases to consumers (tax pass-through). Previous UK research on supermarkets found heterogeneous levels of tax pass-through across the market segments and price distribution of tobacco products. This study uses data from small retailers across the UK to assess whether recent tax changes have been passed on to consumers and if this varies across the price distribution, between countries of the UK and by neighbourhood deprivation.

Unlabelled: Treatment of cancer patients with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) often results in hypertension, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the role of mitochondrial morphology and function, particularly mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes (MAMs), in sunitinib-induced hypertension.
Methods: Both in vitro and in vivo experiments performed to assesse reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation, systemic blood pressure, and mitochondrial function in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and C57BL/6 mouse aortic endothelial cells, under vehicle or sunitinib treatment condition.
