Describing species is fundamental to understanding the biosphere and the origins of biodiversity. Without descriptions, we miss many of the most improbable, interesting, and informative aspects of species, higher taxa, and evolutionary history. Further, descriptive taxonomy opens a treasure trove of nature-inspired solutions for creating a sustainable future.

Assessing the Rise in Papillary Thyroid Cancer Incidence: A 38-Year Australian Study Investigating WHO Classification Influence.

J Epidemiol Glob Health

January 2025

Centre of Environment and Population Health, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Griffith University, Nathan, QLD, 4111, Australia.

The incidence of thyroid cancer has shown marked increases globally over recent decades. This study investigated how the incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) subtypes and World Health Organisation (WHO) endocrine tumour classification changes have affected overall thyroid cancer incidence recorded in Australia. Using incidence data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare cancer registry (spanning 1982 to 2019), this descriptive epidemiological study employed joinpoint regression analysis to assess temporal trends in thyroid carcinoma incidence, focusing on PTC.

Natural language processing-based classification of early Alzheimer's disease from connected speech.

Alzheimers Dement

January 2025

Laboratory for Cognitive Neurology, Department of Neurosciences, Leuven Brain Institute, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.

Introduction: The automated analysis of connected speech using natural language processing (NLP) emerges as a possible biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, it remains unclear which types of connected speech are most sensitive and specific for the detection of AD.

Methods: We applied a language model to automatically transcribed connected speech from 114 Flemish-speaking individuals to first distinguish early AD patients from amyloid negative cognitively unimpaired (CU) and then amyloid negative from amyloid positive CU individuals using five different types of connected speech.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is described as a group of highly malignant primary brain tumors and stands as one of the most lethal malignancies. The genetic and cellular characteristics of GBM have been a focal point of ongoing research, revealing that it is a group of heterogeneous diseases with variations in RNA expression, DNA methylation, or cellular composition. Despite the wealth of molecular data available, the lack of transferable pre-clinic models has limited the application of this information to disease classification rather than treatment stratification.

Morphological and phylogenetic analyses reveal two new species of the (Hypocreales, Nectriaceae) species complex in China.

MycoKeys

January 2025

The Key Laboratory for Silviculture and Conservation of the Ministry of Education, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing 100083, China Beijing Forestry University Beijing China.

The species complex (FFSC) encompasses a diverse array of more than 80 phylogenetic species with both phytopathological and clinical importance. A stable taxonomy is crucial for species in the FFSC due to their economical relevance. Fungal strains used in this study were obtained from and , collected from Beijing and Shaanxi Province.

Background: Open pelvic fractures are rare but represent a serious clinical problem with high mortality rates. Acute mortality is often associated with hemorrhage, whereas delayed mortality is most often associated with sepsis and multiple organ failure. We report a case of Wang's classification of type II open pelvic ring fracture with hemorrhagic shock and septic shock from gas gangrene.
