Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) represent the most efficient devices for producing electrical power from fuels. The limit in their application is due to the high operation temperature of conventional SOFC materials. Progress is made toward lower operating temperatures using alternative oxygen-ion conducting electrolytes, but problems of stability and electronic conductivity still remain. A promising alternative is the use of chemically stable proton-conducting Y-doped BaZrO (BZY) electrolytes, but their practical applications are limited by the BZY's relatively low performance. Herein, it is reported that deposition by impregnation of cathode nanoparticles on BZY backbones provides a powerful strategy to improve the BZY-based SOFC performance below 600 °C, allowing an outstanding power output for this chemically stable electrolyte. Moreover, it is demonstrated that keeping the nanostructure is more important than keeping the desired chemical composition. The proposed scalable processing method can make BZY a competitive electrolyte for SOFC applications.

Dual-Anion-Rich Polymer Electrolytes for High-Voltage Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries.

ACS Nano

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are promising candidates for lithium metal batteries (LMBs) owing to their safety features and compatibility with lithium metal anodes. However, the inferior ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability of SPEs hinder their application in high-voltage solid-state LMBs (HVSSLMBs). Here, a strategy is proposed to develop a dual-anion-rich solvation structure by implementing ferroelectric barium titanate (BTO) nanoparticles (NPs) and dual lithium salts into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based SPEs for HVSSLMBs.

While machine learning (ML) models have been able to achieve unprecedented accuracies across various prediction tasks in quantum chemistry, it is now apparent that accuracy on a test set alone is not a guarantee for robust chemical modeling such as stable molecular dynamics (MD). To go beyond accuracy, we use explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques to develop a general analysis framework for atomic interactions and apply it to the SchNet and PaiNN neural network models. We compare these interactions with a set of fundamental chemical principles to understand how well the models have learned the underlying physicochemical concepts from the data.

Antarctic organisms are known for producing unique secondary metabolites, and this study specifically focuses on the less-explored metabolites of the moss Warnstorfia fontinaliopsis. To evaluate their potential bioactivity, we extracted secondary metabolites using four different solvents and identified significant lipase inhibitory activity in the methanol extract. Non-targeted metabolomic analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) on this extract predicted the presence of 12 compounds, including several not previously reported in mosses.

Conductive eutectogels have emerged as candidates for constructing functional flexible electronics as they are free from the constraints posed by inherent defects associated with solvents and feeble network structures. Nevertheless, developing a facile, environmentally friendly, and rapid polymerization strategy for the construction of conductive eutectogels with integrated multifunctionality is still immensely challenging. Herein, a conductive eutectogel is fabricated through a one-step dialdehyde xylan (DAX)/liquid metal (LM)-initiated polymerization of a deep eutectic solvent.

Inhalable siRNA Targeting IL-11 Nanoparticles Significantly Inhibit Bleomycin-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai 200433, China.

For idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), interleukin 11 (IL-11) is a pivotal cytokine that stimulates the transformation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, thus accelerating the progression of pulmonary fibrosis. Here, we develop an innovative inhalable small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery system termed PEI-GBZA, which demonstrates impressive efficiency in loading siIL-11 targeting IL-11 (siIL-11) and substantially suppresses the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), reduces neutrophil and macrophage recruitment, and ultimately relieves the established fibrotic lesions in the IPF model. PEI-GBZA is prepared by modifying low-molecular-weight polyethylenimine (PEI) with 4-guanidinobenzoic acid (GBZA).
