The UK's Life Sciences Strategy: opportunities for clinical pharmacology.

Br J Clin Pharmacol

Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, London, UK.

Published: October 2018

The UK's Life Sciences Strategy provides UK clinical pharmacologists with a unique opportunity to enhance the impact of their discipline on patients and the NHS as well as the pharmaceutical industry. The full benefits of electronic prescribing systems, supported by artificial intelligence, will require clinical pharmacological expertise. Similarly, the Strategy's support for 'healthy ageing' will only be realized if clinical pharmacologists are able to use their expertise in promoting the safe and effective use of medicines in older people. Furthermore, their needs to be an active - and continuing - collaboration between clinical pharmacologists in the NHS and the pharmaceutical industry in general as well as with the discipline of pharmaceutical medicine.

January 2025

LKS: Rheumatologist, MBChB, FRACP, PhD, Department of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy, Rheumatology Registrar Te Whatu Ora Waitaha, New Zealand and Department of Medicine, University of Otago Christchurch, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Objective: Despite effective treatment, gout is poorly managed. The aim of this study was to determine rates of serum urate (SU) testing and allopurinol dose adjustment in patients on allopurinol admitted to Christchurch based hospitals.

Methods: The hospital electronic prescribing and administration (ePA) system was used to identify patients on allopurinol during hospital admissions from March 2016-March 2023.

Daphnane diterpenoids, as one of the representative types of diterpenoid compounds with rich structural diversity and significant biological activities, have an uncommon 5/7/6 tricyclic skeleton mainly found in species of Thymelaeaceae and Euphorbiaceae families. Due to the unique peculiarity of the framework and remarkable pharmacological activities, over the past three decades, novel structures have been continuously discovered and more structural subtypes have been derived. However, there is always a lack of a unified and convincing structural classification strategy for the summary of daphnane diterpenoids, which affects the in-depth and systematic research of pharmaceutical chemists and pharmacologists.

Background: We sought to comprehensively describe drug-related components associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), describing the incidence of drug-related AKI, the proportion of preventable AKI, identified the various drugs potentially associated with it, explored the risk factors, and assessed the 1-year incidences of the recurrence of drug-related AKI, kidney failure, and death.

Methods: CKD-REIN is a French national prospective cohort of 3033 nephrology outpatients with a confirmed diagnosis of CKD (eGFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m²).

Background/objectives: There has been a lack of a holistic approach to evaluating antibiotic consumption in Kazakhstan over the past few years using an internationally recognized methodology. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a nationwide evaluation of antibiotic consumption in Kazakhstan during the period 2019-2023.

Methods: Defined daily doses per 1000 inhabitants per day (DIDs) were calculated for systemic antibiotics (J01 code of the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System (ATC)) following the methodology established by the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS-AMC).
