This study examined the effects of one single bout daily versus triple bouts of resistance exercise for 12 weeks on muscular strength and anaerobic performance of the upper body. Twenty young male adults (age: 22.0 ± 1.0 years, bench press: 44.0 ± 10.3 kg) were randomly assigned to a single bout (SB) or triple bouts (TB) of resistance exercise group. Maximal strength and anaerobic performance of the upper body using the bench press (one-repetition maximum) and the modified 30 s Wingate test were determined before and after the intervention. Additionally, changes in lactate levels before and after the Wingate test were measured. Although the SB and TB groups showed a significant increase in maximal strength (post-intervention, SB: 67.2 ± 9.2 and TB: 67.6 ± 7.6 kg, respectively) compared with the values at pre-intervention (SB: 44.6 ± 11.4 and TB: 43.9 ± 8.7 kg, respectively), there was no significant difference for this variable between the two groups post-intervention ( > 0.05). The anaerobic performance of the upper body in the SB and TB groups also displayed improvements without significant difference between the two groups after the completion of different training regimes. On the basis of the same training volume, multiple bouts of resistance training showed similar improvements in maximal strength and anaerobic performance to one bout of resistance training in young adult men without prior experience in resistance training.

Background: Exercise and its effect on cardiovascular diseases have been extensively studied in the elderly population. The difference in blood pressure (BP) between fit and unfit subjects can be >5 mmHg. It is not well established whether the positive effects of exercising on BP are associated with exercise type, be it aerobic or anaerobic (maximal muscle strength).

In soil polluted with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), oxygen is rapidly depleted by aerobic respiration, creating a redox gradient across the plume. Under anaerobic conditions, BTEX biodegradation is then coupled with fermentation and methanogenesis. This study aimed to characterize this multi-step process, focusing on the interactions and functional roles of key microbial groups involved.

Various novel technologies are currently under development aimed at improving bio-methane output to tackle challenges related to process stability, biogas production, and methane quality in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The management of substrate type, temperature, pH, hydraulic retention time (HRT), organic loading rate (OLR), and inoculum origin is essential for ensuring process effectiveness, minimizing inhibition, and maximizing production of biogas and methane yield. The review emphasizes sustainability, focusing on the environmental and economic benefits of anaerobic digestion, including the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the minimization of landfill waste, and the provision of renewable energy sources.

In order to study the resistance mechanisms of biofilm and granular sludge to various dissolved oxygen (DO) exposures in anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process, a biofilm - granular sludge anammox reactor was established and operated. Experimental results showed that DO levels of ≤0.41 mg L hardly affected the total nitrogen removal efficiency (TNRE).

Bioelectrochemically improved anaerobic digestion (AD-BES) represents an upgrading strategy for existing biogas plants, consisting of the integration of bioelectrodes within the AD reactor. For this study, a series of laboratory-scale AD-BES reactors were operated, valorising agricultural digestates through the production of biogas. The reactors were inoculated and started-up with three different digestates, leading to significant differences in the microbial community developed on the bioelectrodes.
