Hydrocortisone and aldosterone concentration was determined in 138 patients with arterial hypertension of adrenal and renal genesis in the blood of the adrenal veins and in the cistern of the vena cava inferior, that of deoxycorticosterone in 50 patients, ACTH in 51 and renin activity in the blood plasma of the renal veins in 21 patients. The concentration of steroid hormones adequately reflected adrenal cortex function facilitating differential diagnosis between renal and adrenal pathology variants. Differential diagnostic analysis on the basis of change in the concentration of steroid hormones was found difficult or impossible if the patients received steroidogenesis changing drugs on day, preceding veno graphic examination of the adrenals.

Adrenal haemorrhage in pregnancy is rare but can lead to significant maternal and foetal morbidity if unrecognised. We present the case of a 25-year-old woman in her second pregnancy, who was admitted at 34+4 weeks of gestation with severe abdominal pain. Despite initial unremarkable assessments, further imaging revealed a left adrenal haemorrhage, with evidence of prior right adrenal infarction, resulting in primary adrenal insufficiency.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the primary causes of mortality and disability, with arterial blood pressure being an important factor in the clinical management of TBI. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), widely used as a model of essential hypertension and vascular dementia, demonstrate dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which may contribute to glucocorticoid-mediated hippocampal damage. The aim of this study was to assess acute post-TBI seizures, delayed mortality, and hippocampal pathology in SHRs and normotensive Sprague Dawley rats (SDRs).

Aldosterone, the primary adrenal mineralocorticoid hormone, as an integral part of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), is crucial in blood pressure regulation and maintaining sodium and potassium levels. It interacts with the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) expressed in the kidney and promotes sodium and water reabsorption, thereby increasing blood pressure. However, MRs are additionally expressed in other cells, such as cardiomyocytes, the endothelium, neurons, or brown adipose tissue cells.

The coexistence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and chronic pain (CP) in the elderly population has been extensively documented, and a growing body of evidence supports the potential interconnections between these two conditions. This comprehensive review explores the mechanisms by which CP may contribute to the development and progression of AD, with a particular focus on neuroinflammatory pathways and the role of microglia, as well as the activation of the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. The review proposes that prolonged pain processing in critical brain regions can dysregulate the activity of the NLRP3 inflammasome within microglia, leading to the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and excessive oxidative stress in these regions.
