is a heterogeneous, species-rich genus in the order (, ) that includes invertebrate-pathogenic taxa. In this study, seven new species in producing superficial perithecia infecting various insect hosts (Lepidoptera, Hemiptera) are described from Thailand - and . Phylogenetic analyses based on multigene loci comprising the large subunit of the ribosomal DNA (LSU), partial sequences of elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF) and the largest and second largest subunit of the RNA polymerase (RPB1, PRB2) strongly support these new species of in the . They differ from species previously described species and in the shape and sizes of distinguishing characters such as perithecia, ascospores and conidia. We also report a new record of in Thailand.

Fossil epifoliar fungi are valuable indicators of paleoenvironment and paleoecology. The Meliolaceae, members of which typically inhabit the surface of living plants as biotrophs or pathogens, is one of the largest groups of epifoliar fungi. In this study, we report a novel fossil species of Selkirk (fossil Meliolaceae), , on the lower epidermis of compressed fossil (Hamamelidaceae) leaves from the Upper Pliocene Mangbang Formation of Tengchong, Yunnan, southwestern China.

is the largest genus in Ophiocordycipitaceae and has a broad distribution with high diversity in subtropical and tropical regions. In this study, two new species, pathogenic on lepidopteran larvae are introduced, based on morphological observation and molecular phylogeny. is characterised by having fibrous, stalked stroma with a sterile tip, immersed perithecia, cylindrical asci and filiform ascospores disarticulating into secondary spores.

Article Synopsis
  • The research focused on a specific genus of fungi distinguished by unique morphological traits, and included a phylogenetic analysis that revealed six spider-parasitizing species collected in China.
  • Out of these, three were already known, while three were newly identified species that form distinct subclades in the fungal family.
  • The study also highlighted the expanded host range of these fungi from insects to spiders and contributed to the understanding of conidiophore diversity, paving the way for future ecological research.
