Objectives: Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) has shown significant improvement in cognition in schizophrenia. However, effect sizes of CRT have been reported to be modest raising the issue how to augment the effects of CRT on neurocognition and social cognition. Our aim was to examine whether the addition of computerized social cognition training would enhance the effects on neurocognition and social cognition as compared to CRT alone.

Methods: This is a 12-week, parallel group trial of 131 in- and out-patients with schizophrenia randomized to CRT (COGPACK or Brain Fitness) with computerized social cognition training (MRIGE), or CRT alone for 36 sessions. Participants were assessed at baseline and after 12 weeks of treatment. Assessments included neurocognition, social cognition, psychopathology, and functioning.

Results: The combined intervention, CRT + MRIGE, showed greater improvements in the MCCB indices of Visual Learning, Working Memory, Reasoning and Problem-Solving, and the neurocognitive composite score compared to CRT alone (Bonferroni adjusted p = 0.004, p = 0.005, p = 0.01, respectively), as did social cognition measures (Bonferroni adjusted p = 0.006, p = 0.005, respectively).

Conclusions: Supplementing CRT with computerized social cognition training produced greater benefits in neurocognition, including visual learning, memory, executive functions, and social cognition relative to cognitive training alone. These findings favoring the combined training may be contributed to both the greater overall amount of cognitive practice, as well as the specific cognitive functions engaged by the social cognition training.

Background: The concept of cognitive reserve may explain inter-individual differences in susceptibility to neuropathological changes. Studies suggest that experiences over a lifetime impact on cognitive reserve, and it is hypothesised that following a dementia diagnosis, greater reserve levels are linked to accelerated disease progression.

Objective: To investigate the longitudinal impact of cognitive reserve on cognitive and functional abilities, physical activity and quality of life in people with dementia.

Biomarkers of ageing (BA) can predict health risks beyond chronological age, but little is known about how marital/living status affects longitudinal changes in BA. We examined the association between marital/living status and BA over time using the-Swedish-Adoption/Twin-Study-of-Aging (SATSA) cohort. Four BAs were analyzed: telomere length (TL) (638 individuals; 1603 measurements), DNAmAge (535 individuals; 1392 measurements), cognition (823 individuals; 3218 measurements), and frailty index (FI) (1828 individuals; 9502 measurements).

Research into new solutions for wearable assistive devices for the visually impaired is an important area of assistive technology (AT). This plays a crucial role in improving the functionality and independence of the visually impaired, helping them to participate fully in their daily lives and in various community activities. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of the literature published over the last decade on wearable assistive devices for the visually impaired, retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) using CiteSpace, to provide an overview of the current state of research, trends, and hotspots in the field.

Cognitive impairment in various mental illnesses, particularly neuropsychiatric disorders, has adverse functional and clinical consequences. While genetic mutations and epigenetic dysregulations of several genes during embryonic and adult periods are linked to cognitive impairment in mental disorders, the composition and diversity of resident bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract-shaped by environmental factors-also influence the brain epigenome, affecting behavior and cognitive functions. Accordingly, many recent studies have provided evidence that human gut microbiota may offer a potential avenue for improving cognitive deficits.
