Background: The curability of hepatoblastoma (HB) largely depends on the achievement of radical surgical resection, even for metastatic tumors. However, the extension of the metastatic tumor when viewed through an endoscope with the conventional white-light mode is often unclear. Advancements in imaging technology utilizing indocyanine green (ICG) have facilitated precise resection of metastatic HBs, owing to the longer retention of ICG in such lesions than in other normal tissues.

Case: We utilized an endoscope loaded with the PINPOINT system (NOVADAQ Technologies, Inc., Ontario, Canada), which allows for real-time overlay visualization with the same focal range between the white-light mode and near-infrared mode. Metastatic HBs that have taken up ICG are visualized as an area of green color superimposed on a high-definition white-light image. A 19-year-old female who underwent liver transplantation for an unresectable HB 2 years earlier was noted to have metastases on the diaphragm and the pleura. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging showed metastatic HBs on the right pleura extending from the ribs and the diaphragm. The margin of the metastatic tumor was more sharply demarcated by the PINPOINT system than that detected in the normal white-light mode. The tumor was successfully resected en bloc with real-time guidance utilizing the overlay image. The alphafetoprotein levels were normalized and have remained within normal limits in the 12 months since the operation.

Conclusion: Novel overlay imaging technology with ICG makes it possible to achieve real-time precise resection of metastatic HBs.

The kidney plays an important role in iron homeostasis and mesangial cells (MCs) are phagocytic cells important for glomerular homeostasis. Sickle hemoglobin (HbS) modulators are promising clinical candidates for treatment of sickle cell disease. Although they prevent disease pathophysiology of HbS polymerization and red blood cell (RBC) sickling by increasing hemoglobin oxygen affinity, higher oxygen affinity can also cause transient tissue hypoxia with compensatory increases in erythropoiesis and subsequent increases in RBC turnover.

We evaluated the efficacy of a booster dose of HBV in Italian medical students. We conducted a prospective observational study in students who had received a full course of anti-HBV vaccination for at least 15 y. Those with an anti-HBs titer <10 mIU/mL were offered a booster dose of the HBV vaccine and the antibody titer was reevaluated after 1 month.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a significant global health concern, with existing treatments yielding low rates of HBsAg seroclearance; VIR-2218 (elebsiran) is being studied for its potential to reduce HBsAg levels.
  • This phase 2 open-label study involved participants aged 18-65 from various countries who had chronic HBV but no cirrhosis, assessing the safety and effectiveness of VIR-2218 alone and in combination with pegylated interferon-alpha-2a.
  • The study aimed to measure adverse events and clinical outcomes, including the reduction of HBsAg and long-term seroclearance rates among those receiving different treatment regimens over a period ranging from

  • Healthcare workers are at a high risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, making vaccination and antibody level monitoring essential after immunization.
  • A study conducted on 200 healthcare workers in Šabac, Serbia found that while 100% were vaccinated, only 85% had a protective antibody level, indicating a gap in vaccine effectiveness.
  • Factors influencing antibody levels included the number of vaccine doses received and pre-existing health conditions, highlighting the need for improved monitoring strategies and continuous education for healthcare professionals regarding vaccination safety.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder where individuals have a mutated form of hemoglobin, leading to a range of complications like osteomyelitis, particularly affecting bones like the tibia and femur.
  • - This study aimed to identify the signs that help diagnose osteomyelitis in pediatric patients with SCD who were experiencing vaso-occlusive crises or suspected osteomyelitis.
  • - Involving 28 children, the study found that most blood cultures showed no growth, but some did have infections like salmonella. Key indicators such as leukocytosis and high ferritin levels were linked to osteomyelitis, with diagnostic imaging revealing certain cases of bone edema.
