Acyl coenzyme A : cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT), the enzyme catalyzing the hepatic cholesterol esterification, could be involved in the modified availability of cholesterol detectable in proliferating systems. While no significant variations are detectable in the regenerating liver, the modified ACAT activity during liver development and its differential sensitivity to the in vitro stimulation of modulatory systems suggest an involvement of the enzyme in this proliferating process.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a major etiological factor underpinning a spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, leading to cerebral infarction, coronary artery disease, and peripheral vascular disease. The chronic progression of AS, spanning from initial plaque formation to the occurrence of acute cardiovascular events, underscores the complexity of AS and the challenges it presents in terms of treatment. Currently, the clinical management of AS relies predominantly on statins and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors, which primarily aim to reduce low-density lipoprotein levels and have demonstrated some therapeutic efficacy.

The phospholipids in the plasma membrane are of high affinity; consequently, they are fully complexed with the sterol. This sets the resting level of plasma membrane cholesterol.
