We report the demonstration of a 2850 nm diode-pumped Ho, Pr co-doped fluoride fiber amplifier that delivers pulses with an average power of 2.45 W, 122 μJ energy, and 500 ps duration at a repetition rate of 20 kHz. To the best of our knowledge, the average power and pulse energy are the highest to be obtained from a sub-nanosecond fiber source operating in the 3 μm spectral region. The amplifier is seeded by an optical parametric generation source and is pumped around 915 nm using widely available InGaAs laser diodes.

Distributed feedback lasers, which feature rapid wavelength tunability, are not presently available in the yellow and orange spectral regions, impeding spectroscopic studies of short-lived species that absorb light in this range. To meet this need, a rapidly tunable laser system was constructed, characterized, and demonstrated for measurements of the NH radical at 597.4 nm.

Optical computing offers advantages such as high bandwidth and low loss, playing a crucial role in signal processing, communication, and sensing applications. Traditional optical logic gates, based on nonlinear fibers and optical amplifiers, suffer from poor robustness and large footprints, hindering their on-chip integration. All-optical logic gates based on topological photonic crystals have emerged as a promising approach for developing robust and monolithic optical computing systems.

In this paper, we demonstrated a novel bidirectional high-speed transmission system integrating a free-space optical (FSO) communication with a 5G wireless link, utilizing a high-power erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) for enhanced loss compensation. The system supports downlink rates of 1-Gb/s/4.5-GHz and 10-Gb/s at 24-GHz and 39-GHz, and an uplink rate of 10-Gb/s/28-GHz.

Space division multiplexing (SDM) with Hermite Gaussian (HG) modes, for instance, can significantly boost the transmission link capacity. However, SDM is not suitable in existing single mode fiber networks, and in long-distance wireless, microwave, THz or optical links, the far-field beam distribution may present a problem. Recently it has been demonstrated, that time domain HG modes can be employed to enhance the link capacity.
