Respiratory viral infections have a considerable detrimental impact on animal health as well as significant financial consequences in the poultry industry. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the major pathogens involved in respiratory diseases of poultry, the co-infection rate, and their epidemiological distribution in commercial chicken farms in Bangladesh. From June 2022 to December 2023, 300 pooled samples (swabs from live birds, and respiratory tissues from dead birds) were collected from the selected poultry farms where respiratory outbreaks were noticed.

A comprehensive analysis framework for evaluating commercial single-cell RNA sequencing technologies.

Nucleic Acids Res

December 2024

Department of Proteomic and Genomic Technologies, Genentech, South San Francisco, 94080, CA, USA.

This study examined nine prominent commercially available single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) kits across four technology groups. Each kit was characterized using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from a single donor, which enabled consistent assessment of factors such as analytical performance, protocol duration and cost. The Chromium Fixed RNA Profiling kit from 10× Genomics, with its probe-based RNA detection method, demonstrated the best overall performance.

Ultrasonication modifies the structural, thermal and functional properties of pumpkin seed protein isolate (PSPI).

Ultrason Sonochem

January 2025

Department of Food Technology, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi 110062, India. Electronic address:

Protein isolates from pumpkin seeds were prepared and then treated with high-intensity ultrasound (HIUS) using a probe-based method. The impact of ultrasonication on the physicochemical, molecular, and thermal properties of these isolates were analyzed and compared to untreated controls. Results showed significant improvements (p ≤ 0.

Developing and validating a multiplex hydrolysis probe-based quantitative PCR assay for the detection of four pathogens in chelonians.

Wildlife Epidemiology Laboratory, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL 61802, USA; Chicago Zoological Society/Brookfield Zoo, Brookfield, IL 60513, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Many wildlife conservation efforts focus on understanding the impact of multiple pathogens on species, rather than just one, to improve success rates.
  • Researchers created a multiplex quantitative PCR assay to simultaneously detect four pathogens affecting eastern box turtles, showing high consistency and reliability in results.
  • This assay serves as a quick diagnostic tool for monitoring these pathogens, aiding in future studies on how they affect turtle populations and health.

Factors impacting target-enriched long-read sequencing of resistomes and mobilomes.

Genome Res

November 2024

Food-Centric Corridor, Infectious Disease Laboratory, Department of Veterinary Population Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota 55108, USA;

We investigated the efficiency of target-enriched long-read sequencing (TELSeq) for detecting antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) within complex matrices. We aimed to overcome limitations associated with traditional antimicrobial resistance (AMR) detection methods, including short-read shotgun metagenomics, which can lack sensitivity, specificity, and the ability to provide detailed genomic context. By combining biotinylated probe-based enrichment with long-read sequencing, we facilitated the amplification and sequencing of ARGs, eliminating the need for bioinformatic reconstruction.
