Atmospheric Technologies Group, Savannah River National Laboratory, Aiken, SC.

Pollutants from anthropogenic activities including industrial processes are ubiquitous to the environment. To understand the impact from industrial aerosol on climate and human health, industrial aerosol needs to be better characterized. In this study, particle number concentrations were used as a proxy for atmospheric pollutants, which include both particles and gases.

Background: Pathobiology of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with changes among respiratory epithelium structure and function. Increased levels of PM from urban particulate matter (UPM) are correlated with enlarged rate of asthma and COPD morbidity as well as acute disease exacerbation. It has been suggested that pre-existing pulmonary obstructive diseases predispose epithelium for different biological response than in healthy airways.

Patient perspectives on educational needs in scleroderma-interstitial lung disease.

J Scleroderma Relat Disord

January 2025

Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY, USA.

Background: Systemic sclerosis is a chronic and rare connective tissue disease with multiorgan effects, including interstitial lung disease (ILD). Navigating systemic sclerosis-interstitial lung disease presents a challenge for patients due to the gaps in patient education, which can impact patient health and quality of life. This study utilized the nominal group technique to identify priority knowledge gaps among patients with systemic sclerosis-interstitial lung disease and inform future educational interventions and research.

Introduction: The environmental impact of on-site conferences, with air travel as the primary contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, has prompted a surge in research in recent years. The objective of this report is to raise awareness and stimulate transformation in the organisation of meetings of the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS).

Methods: We conducted estimations of travel-related COeq emissions of EHPS conferences in 2019, 2022, and 2023, and performed projections for 2024 and 2025.

December 2024

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK.

Globally, the transport sector is a major contributor to air pollution. Currently, in the UK, vehicle emissions contribute significant amounts of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) pollution in urban areas. Low-emission-zone policies have been used as an intervention to tackle air pollution, and in this context, the UK launched the Low-Traffic Neighbourhood scheme.
