Compatible Kinetic Model for Quantitative Description of Dual-Clock Behavior of the Complex Thiourea-Iodate Reaction.

Inorg Chem

January 2023

Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences, University of Pécs, Ifjúság útja 6, H-7624Pécs, Hungary.

The thiourea-iodate reaction has been investigated simultaneously by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Absorbance-time traces measured at the isosbestic point of the iodine-triiodide system have revealed a special dual-clock behavior. During the first kinetic stage of the title reaction, iodine suddenly appears only after a well-defined time lag when thiourea is totally consumed due to the rapid thiourea-iodine system giving rise to a substrate-depletive clock reaction.

Mathematical modelling of the vitamin C clock reaction.

R Soc Open Sci

April 2019

School of Mathematics, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK.

Chemical clock reactions are characterized by a relatively long induction period followed by a rapid 'switchover' during which the concentration of a rises rapidly. In addition to their interest in chemistry education, these reactions are relevant to industrial and biochemical applications. A substrate-depletive, non-autocatalytic clock reaction involving household chemicals (vitamin C, iodine, hydrogen peroxide and starch) is modelled mathematically via a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations.

In vitro high-throughput non-depletive quantitation of chemicals in biofluids is of growing interest in many areas. Some of the challenges facing researchers include the limited volume of biofluids, rapid and high-throughput sampling requirements, and the lack of reliable methods. Coupled to the above, growing interest in the monitoring of kinetics and dynamics of miniaturized biosystems has spurred the demand for development of novel and revolutionary methodologies for analysis of biofluids.

Unlabelled: Excess body iron could persist for years after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) with possible deleterious sequels. An iron depletive therapy with phlebotomy seems rational. Kinetics of iron removal by phlebotomy without erythropoietin support in non-thalassemic adult patients with iron overload after HCT and the impact of pre- and post-HCT hemochromatosis (HFE) genotype on iron mobilization were investigated.
