The will is a word that nurses may use to describe their patients' actions or inactions. This concept has been extensively addressed by religions, psychologists, and philosophers. Ricoeur offered a phenomenology of the will in which three overarching key concepts were uncovered: decision, action, and consent. In this article, Ricoeur's elaborative and exhaustive description of these three concepts is summarized. Examples as to how a phenomenology of the will may guide nurses in their day-to-day clinical practice in caring are provided. In research, Ricoeur's phenomenology of the will may be used as a heuristic to guide phenomenological studies. An introduction to the will may act as a bridge between the art and science of nursing, providing nursing students with a greater understanding of the meaning of and need to provide holistic care.

The growing view that consciousness is widespread, multimodal, and evolutionarily non-linear in complexity across the animal kingdom has given rise recently to a variety of strategies for representing the heterogeneous nature of animal phenomenology. While based on markers clearly associated with consciousness in humans, most of these strategies are theoretical constructs lacking empirical data and are based on metrics appropriate for humans but difficult to measure in most non-human species. I propose a novel symbolic profile based on readily observable behaviors that logically constitute subjective experience across the entire spectrum of animals that possess a centralized nervous system.

Postpartum psychosis (PP) is a severe psychiatric disorder-with limited data or consensus on diagnostic criteria and clinical presentation-that affects thousands of people each year. The Massachusetts General Hospital Postpartum Psychosis Project (MGHP3) was established to: 1) describe the phenomenology of PP, and 2) identify genomic and clinical predictors in a large cohort. Results thus far point to a richer understanding of the heterogeneity and complexity of this often-misunderstood illness and its nature over time.

Metal halide perovskites are mixed ionic-electronic semiconductors that involve an important and particular phenomenology that negatively affects the performance and stability of next-generation photovoltaic devices based on such material. The ionic nature of perovskites is shown to undergo not only a simple redistribution of charges but also influences the electronic processes and ultimately the steady-state device operation. Nevertheless, a comprehensive understanding of the internal contributions of ionic and electronic conductivities to the evolution of current during device performance experiments and to degradation losses in ageing tests is currently missing.
