The blue sepal color of hydrangea is due to a metal complex anthocyanin composed of 3--glucosyldelphinidin () and an aluminum ion with the co-pigments 5--caffeoylquinic acid () and/or 5---coumaroylquinic acid (). The three components, namely anthocyanin, Al and 5--acylquinic acids, are essential for blue color development, but the complex is unstable and only exists in an aqueous solution. Furthermore, the complex did not give analyzable NMR spectra or crystals. Therefore, many trials to determine the detailed chemical structure of the hydrangea-blue complex have not been successful to date. Instead, via experiments mixing , Al and or in a buffered solution at pH 4.0, we obtained the same blue solution derived from the sepals. However, the ratio was not stoichiometric but fluctuated. To determine the composition of the complex, we tried direct observation of the molecular ion of the complex using electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry. In a very low-concentration buffer solution (2.0 mM) at pH 4.0, we reproduced the hydrangea-blue color by mixing , and Al in ratios of 1:1:1, 1:2:1 and 1:3:1. All solution gave the same molecular ion peak at / = 843, indicating that the blue solution has a ratio of 1:1:1 for the complex. By using , the observed mass number was / = 827 and the ratio of , and Al was also 1:1:1. A mixture of , 3--caffeoylquinic acid () and Al did not give any blue color but instead was purple, and the intensity of the molecular ion peak at / = 843 was very low. These results strongly indicate that the hydrangea blue-complex is composed of a ratio of 1:1:1 for , Al and or .

Metal-centered chirality has been recognized for over one century, and stereogenic-at-metal complexes where chirality is exclusively attributed to the metal center due to the specific coordination pattern of achiral ligands around the metal ion, has been broadly utilized in diverse areas of natural science. However, synthesis of these molecules remains constrained. Notably, while asymmetric catalysis has played a crucial role in the production of optically active organic molecules, its application to stereogenic-at-metal complexes is less straightforward.

Under salt stress, autophagy regulates ionic balance, scavenges ROS, and supports nutrient remobilization, thereby alleviating osmotic and oxidative damage. Salt stress is a major environmental challenge that significantly impacts plant growth and agricultural productivity by disrupting nutrient balance, inducing osmotic stress, and causing the accumulation of toxic ions like Na. Autophagy, a key cellular degradation and recycling pathway, plays a critical role in enhancing plant salt tolerance by maintaining cellular homeostasis and mitigating stress-induced damage.

Transpiration-driven electrokinetic power generators (TEPGs) hold promising potential for intelligent chemical sensing applications, enabling the efficient identification and screening of organic solvents. Here, we report a novel TEPG-based chemical sensor using MoS-doped cellulose filter paper for efficient detection of poplar solvents like water, alcohols, and methanol. TEPGs operate by leveraging capillary-driven transpiration to induce solvent flow through porous materials, leading to ion migration and the formation of electrical double layers (EDLs) at the solid-liquid interfaces.

However, numerous mutations of uncertain significance are also linked to different conditions or benign traits. Our study characterized 21 variants and measured their impact on protein localization and intracellular levels of Cd, Zn, and Mn We identified four variants that disrupt protein expression, five variants with high retention in the endoplasmic reticulum, and 12 variants with localization to the plasma membrane.
