Multi-action cisplatin-based mono- (1) and di-clofibric acid (2) Pt(iv) "combo" derivatives were synthesized via both traditional and microwave assisted procedures. The two complexes offered very good performances (IC50 values in a nanomolar range) on a panel of human tumor cell lines, including the highly chemoresistant malignant pleural mesothelioma ones. Moreover, both 1 and 2 bypass the cisplatin resistance. Indeed, cisplatin and clofibric acid, the metabolites of the Pt(iv) → Pt(ii) intracellular reduction, proved to act synergistically. The adjuvant action of clofibric acid relies on the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) that, in turn, decreases the level of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1α. Both compounds induced extensive apoptosis in tumor cells, also via oxidative stress. Finally, 2 exhibited excellent performances also under the hypoxic conditions typical of solid tumors, where cisplatin is less effective.

Weighted Echo State Graph Neural Networks Based on Robust and Epitaxial Film Memristors.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

Hardware system customized toward the demands of graph neural network learning would promote efficiency and strong temporal processing for graph-structured data. However, most amorphous/polycrystalline oxides-based memristors commonly have unstable conductance regulation due to random growth of conductive filaments. And graph neural networks based on robust and epitaxial film memristors can especially improve energy efficiency due to their high endurance and ultra-low power consumption.

The development of mechanically robust super-lubrication hydrogel materials with sustained lubricity at high contact pressures is challenging. In this work, inspired by the durable lubricity feature of the earthworm epidermis, a multilevel structural super-lubrication hydrogel (MS-SLH) system, the so-called lubricant self-pumping hydrogel, is developed. The MS-SLH system is manufactured by chemically dissociating a double network hydrogel to generate robust and wrinkled lubrication layer, and then laser etching was used to generate cylindrical texture pores as gland-like pockets for storing lubricants.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of the volume and minimum axial area (MAA) measurements between different upper and lower boundaries used for oropharyngeal airway assessment.

Methods: Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans of 49 subjects taken for pre-orthognathic surgical planning were obtained retrospectively from the archives (n = 49; 32 females, 17 males; mean age = 20.9 ± 5.

The knowledge of diffusion mechanisms in materials is crucial for predicting their high-temperature performance and stability, yet accurately capturing the underlying physics like thermal effects remains challenging. In particular, the origin of the experimentally observed non-Arrhenius diffusion behavior has remained elusive, largely due to the lack of effective computational tools. Here we propose an efficient ab initio framework to compute the Gibbs energy of the transition state in vacancy-mediated diffusion including the relevant thermal excitations at the density-functional-theory level.

Robotically assisted mitral valve repair using the butterfly technique in a patient with a narrow chest.

Background: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery for mitral regurgitation is challenging in patients with narrow chests due to limited thoracic space. The butterfly technique can prevent systolic anterior motion in patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation and redundant posterior leaflets, but it is difficult to perform via minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Few reports have described mitral valve repair using the butterfly technique or in a narrow chest.
