Background: Plant viral diseases cause tremendous decreases in yield and quality. Natural polycyclic compounds such as those containing carbocycles are often very important lead compounds for drug and pesticide development. Tricyclic spiranoid lactones with 5 5 6 -ring fusion topologies possess various bioactivities. In this study, 33 new 5 5 6 tricyclic spirolactones were rationally designed, synthesized, characterized and evaluated for antiviral activities.

Result: These compounds showed no apparent toxicity against Italian honeybees up to 2.73 µg bee . Spirolactones 14, 16, 19, 23 and 28 at a concentration of 100 µg mL inactivated 90% of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) infection, making these compounds much more potent than the positive controls. Significantly, compound 19 displayed the best inactivation activity causing inhibition of up to 98%.

Conclusion: The results of the bioassays and QSAR studies indicated that the carbon-containing cyclic moiety was the antiviral pharmacophore, and derivative 19, which showed the best inactivation activity, could emerge as a potential antiviral agent against TMV. In vitro capsid protein (CP) assembly and TMV assembly inhibition determinations indicated that these compounds induced crosslinking in the TMV and prevented its uncoating, which was a putative new mode of action for TMV inactivation. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Background: Recent studies show that the increase in breath hydrogen (BH) and symptoms after ingestion of inulin is reduced by co-administering psyllium.

Objectives: To determine if slowing delivery of inulin to the colon by administering it in divided doses would mimic the effect of psyllium. Primary endpoint was the BH area under the curve AUC.

For over three decades, praziquantel (PZQ) has been the mainstay chemotherapy for prevention and treatment of schistosomiasis. The excessive use of PZQ, coupled with the lack of advanced drug candidates in the current anti-schistosomiasis drug development pipeline, emphasizes the genuine need for new drugs. In the current work, we investigated the antischistosomal potential of a new series of compounds derived from the privileged benzimidazole scaffold, which exhibited low micromolar IC potency in the range of 1.

[Investigation of general toxic effects of Relatox in comparison with Dysport].

OOO NBC «Pharmbiomed», Moscow, Russia.

Objective: To evaluate the toxic effects of the agent Relatox on mature outbred rats and mice in an acute experiment in comparison with the registered analogue Dysport.

Material And Methods: Based on the aim of experiment, the acute toxic effects of Relatox and Dysport were assessed on two animal species: rats and mice at intraperitoneal and intramuscular administration at dose levels that made it possible to calculate the toxicological parameter values (initially 10-150 U/kg with subsequent usage of additional doses 20 U/kg to 300 U/kg depending on the agent and route of administration). The LD values and other acute toxic parameters were calculated using probit analysis.

The social life of creative methods: Filmmaking, fabulation and recovery.

Artist in Residence, Centre for Health, Arts, Society and the Environment (CHASE), University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK.

In this article we consider the theoretical and methodological implications of Deleuzian fabulation for research on recovery from drugs and alcohol as an alternative way of making and doing methods in sociology. The article draws on data produced as part of an ongoing interdisciplinary research collaboration, begun in 2019, with the visual artist and filmmaker Melanie Manchot, social scientists Nicole Vitellone and Lena Theodoropoulou, and people in recovery from drugs and alcohol engaged in the production of Manchot's first feature film STEPHEN. This project attends to the methodological practice of filmmaking as a way of thinking with and alongside colleagues from divergent disciplines about the role of methods, concepts and practices for confronting and resisting processes of stigmatisation.
