Background: People with disabilities often incur higher costs for healthcare, due to higher needs, greater indirect costs, and the need for services not offered by the public system. Yet, people with disabilities are more likely to experience poverty and so have reduced capacity to pay. Health insurance is an important social protection strategy to meet healthcare needs and avoid catastrophic expenditures for this group.

The Health Sustainable Development Goal (SDG3) focuses on achieving universal healthcare coverage (UHC) through people-centered primary care and access to affordable high-quality healthcare services, medicines/vaccines, and specialized care professionals without undue financial stress. However, achieving UHC can be challenging if healthcare providers and patients cannot communicate meaningfully. Severe language barriers affect access to healthcare services.

Eye care health promotion interventions aim to encourage the adoption of healthy behaviours that impact eye health and vision impairment, as well as increase the use of eye care services. Thus, this study aims to explore and describe the perceptions of eye care coordinators on the implementation of eye care health promotion interventions in rural Limpopo Province. This exploratory, descriptive qualitative study employed individual in-depth interviews to collect data from 10 district eye health coordinators.
