The forelimb skeletal patterns of two geographically isolated populations of Triturus carnifex, one from northern Italy (Rosate, Milano) and one from central Italy (Bagnaia, Perugia) were studied. A total of 1,018 limbs were examined. Limb skeletal variants, generally consisting either of a reduced number of carpals and/or of an alternate phalangeal formula, were commonly observed, as has been reported for other amphibian species. The population from northern Italy showed a greater variability than that from central Italy. Skeletal variants were present in 34% and 12% of the limbs, respectively (i.e., in 48% and 20% of the newts). In the Rosate population, the majority of variants consisted of fusions of radiale and prepollicis and of the phalangeal formula 1-2-3-2. Severe skeletal defects were also found in 3% of the limbs of the newts from Rosate and in 1% of the limbs of those from Bagnaia. At present, no conclusion can be drawn about the evolutionary significance of the limb skeletal variation observed in the two populations, because of the paucity of data on intra- and interpopulation variations in other species of the genus Triturus. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Introduction: Calf muscular vein thrombosis (CMVT) is a type of distal deep vein thrombosis, which is common in geriatric hip fracture patients. However, studies focusing on whether the orthopedic operation has an impact on the prognosis of geriatric hip fracture patients with CMVT are very limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore whether geriatric hip fractures with CMVT affect the mortality of patients within one year postoperatively.

Association of calf circumference with osteoporosis and hip fracture in middle-aged and older adults: a secondary analysis.

Background: Osteosarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome associated with an increased risk of frailty, falls, fractures, disability, and death. Calf circumference (CC) has been used as a simple and practical skeletal muscle marker to diagnose sarcopenia. This study aimed to explore the relationship of calf circumference and osteoporosis (OP) and hip fractures (HF) in middle-aged and older adults.

Background: INTER- and INTRAmuscular fat (IMF) is elevated in high metabolic states and can promote inflammation. While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) excels in depicting IMF, the lack of reproducible tools prevents the ability to measure change and track intervention success.

Methods: We detail an open-source fully-automated iterative threshold-seeking algorithm (ITSA) for segmenting IMF from T1-weighted MRI of the calf and thigh within three cohorts (CaMos Hamilton (N = 54), AMBERS (N = 280), OAI (N = 105)) selecting adults 45-85 years of age.

We compared the force-velocity (F-V) characteristics between jump squat (JS) and weightlifting (hang clean [HC] and HC pull [HCP]) to determine lower limb F-V portions targeted by weightlifting exercises. Ten weightlifters performed JS at 0% (body weight only) to 70% of their one-repetition maximum (1RM) for back squat, and HC and HCP at 30‒90% and 30‒110% of their 1RM for HC, respectively. Force and velocity values at each relative load were plotted to determine the F-V features of JS, HC, and HCP.

Human motion similarity evaluation based on deep metric learning.

Sci Rep

December 2024

College of Sports, Beihua University, Jilin, 132000, China.

In order to eliminate the impact of camera viewpoint factors and human skeleton differences on the action similarity evaluation and to address the issue of human action similarity evaluation under different viewpoints, a method based on deep metric learning is proposed in this article. The method trains an automatic encoder-decoder deep neural network model by means of a homemade synthetic dataset, which maps the 2D human skeletal key point sequence samples extracted from motion videos into three potential low-dimensional dense spaces. Action feature vectors independent of camera viewpoint and human skeleton structure are extracted in the low-dimensional dense spaces, and motion similarity metrics are performed based on these features, thereby effectively eliminating the effects of camera viewpoint and human skeleton size differences on motion similarity evaluation.
