Trace detection of common pesticide residue is necessary to assure safety of fruit and vegetables, given that the potential health risk to consumers is attributed to the contamination of the sources. A simple, rapid and effective means of finding the residue is however required for household purposes. In recent years, the technique in association with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been well developed in particular for trace detection of target molecules. Herein, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were integrated with sol-gel spin-coated Zirconia nanofibers (ZrO₂ NFs) as a chemically stable substrate and used for SERS application. The morphologies of Au NPs/ZrO₂ NFs were adjusted by the precursor concentrations (_X, X = 0.05⁻0.5 M) and the effect of SERS on Au NPs/ZrO₂ NFs_X was evaluated by different Raman laser wavelengths using rhodamine 6G as the probe molecule at low concentrations. The target pesticides, phosmet (P1), carbaryl (C1), permethrin (P2) and cypermethrin (C2) were thereafter tested and analyzed. Au NPs/ZrO₂ NFs_0.3 exhibited an enhancement factor of 2.1 × 10⁷, which could detect P1, C1, P2 and C2 at the concentrations down to 10, 10, 10 and 10 M, respectively. High selectivity to the organophosphates was also found. As the pesticides were dip-coated on an apple and then measured on the diluted juice containing sliced apple peels, the characteristic peaks of each pesticide could be clearly identified. It is thus promising to use NPs/ZrO₂ NFs_0.3 as a novel SERS-active substrate for trace detection of pesticide residue upon, for example, fruits or vegetables.

A compact dual-gas sensor based on the two near-infrared distributed feedback diode lasers and a multipass cell has been established for the simultaneous measurement of methane (CH) and acetylene (CH). The time division multiplexing calibration-free direct absorption spectroscopy is used to eliminate the cross interference in the application of multicomponent gas sensors. A wavelength stabilization technique based on the proportion integration differentiation feedback control is developed to suppress laser wavelength drift and an H-infinity (H) filter algorithm to reduce the system noise.

Background: To integrate valves, manifolds, and solid-phase extraction (SPE) columns into a compact device is technically difficult. Four-dimensional printing (4DP) technologies, employing stimuli-responsive materials in three-dimensional printing (3DP), are revolutionizing the fabrication, functionality, and applicability of stimuli-responsive analytical devices that can show time-dependent shape programming to enable more complex geometric designs and functions. However, 4D-printed stimuli-responsive actuators and valves utilized to control flowing streams in SPE applications remain rare.

Background: In current years, the CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) based strategies have emerged as the most promising molecular tool in the field of gene editing, intracellular imaging, transcriptional regulation and biosensing. However, the recent CRISPR-based diagnostic technologies still require the incorporation of other amplification strategies (such as polymerase chain reaction) to improve the cis/trans cleavage activity of Cas12a, which complicates the detection workflow and lack of a uniform compatible system to respond to the target in one pot.
Results: To better fully-functioning CRISPR/Cas12a, we reported a novel technique for straightforward nucleic acid detection by incorporating enzyme-responsive steric hindrance-based branched inhibitors with CRISPR/AsCas12a methodology.

Background: The simplicity of synthesis methods has facilitated the illegal manufacture of various fentanyl analogs, leading to numerous fatal overdoses worldwide, particularly in North America. Fentanyl analogs with similar structures are difficult to distinguish due to their fragmentation patterns, making separation using chromatography essential. Additionally, because fentanyl analogs are lethal even in trace amounts, they are easily smuggled, and commonly used fentanyl test strips often fail to detect them due to their low sensitivity.
