Two salts (2 and 4) containing the radical cations of complexed diphosphenes have been isolated and characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The P-P bond is coordinated to the Cr center either in an end-on (in 2) or a side-on (in 4) fashion. The spin density of the radical is delocalized over the Cr atom and the two P atoms in 2 whereas the unpaired electron is mainly localized on the Cr atom in 4. This work provides the first example of a complexed diphosphene radical (2) featuring novel three-center three-electron (3c-3e) π-bonding in the Cr-P-P unit, and the first example of a 17 e Cr radical with a side-on π-bonded ligand (4).

(Im)P-P(Dipp)˙ (1˙), a rare example of a neutral, mixed substituted diphosphene radical, has been prepared by reduction of (Im)PP(Dipp)[OTf] (2[OTf]) and (Im)PP(Cl)(Dipp) (3) with cobaltocene (CoCp) (Im = 4,5-dichloro-1,3-bis(1,3-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazol-2-yl, Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl). Radical compound 1˙ readily activates white phosphorus (P), resulting in the formation of an intriguing octaphosphane butterfly compound P(Im)(Dipp) (4).

Modulating the electronic structures of main group element compounds is crucial to control their chemical reactivity. Herein we report on the synthesis, frontier orbital modulation, and one-electron oxidation of two L(X)Ga-substituted diphosphenes [L(X)GaP] (X = Cl 2a, Br 2b; L = HC[C(Me)N(Ar)], Ar = 2,6-PrCH). Photolysis of L(Cl)GaPCO 1 gave [L(Cl)GaP]2a, which reacted with MeSiBr with halide exchange to [L(Br)GaP]2b.

ConspectusMolecules and materials with easily tunable electronic structures and properties are at the forefront of contemporary research. π-Conjugation is fundamental in organic chemistry and plays a key role in the design of molecular materials. In this Account, we showcase the applicability of N-heterocyclic vinyl (NHV) substituents based on classical N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) for tuning the structure, properties, and stability of main-group species (E) via π-conjugation and/or π-donation.

Synthesis and decarbonylation chemistry of gallium phosphaketenes.

Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford, Chemistry Research Laboratory, 12 Mansfield Road, Oxford, OX1 3TA, UK.

A series of gallium phosphaketenyl complexes supported by a 1,2-bis(aryl-imino)acenaphthene ligand (Dipp-Bian) are reported. Photolysis of one such species induced decarbonylation to afford a gallium substituted diphosphene. Addition of Lewis bases, specifically trimethylphosphine and the gallium carbenoid Ga(Nacnac) (Nacnac = HC[C(Me)N-(C6H3)-2,6-iPr2]2), resulted in displacement of the phosphaketene carbonyl to yield base-stabilised phosphinidenes.
