Arsenic, being a global pollutant needs a potential remedy which could fight against its associated toxicities. Ellagic acid (EA) is a known agent for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects, and it is commonly found in fruits. The present study is designed to determine protective efficacy of EA against arsenic induced toxicity with special mention to inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction in hippocampi of wistar rats. Rats were pre-treated with EA (20 and 40 mg/kg b.wt; p.o. for 11 days) along with arsenic (10 mg/kg; p.o. for 8 days). Total reactive oxygen species level and mitochondrial membrane potential were analyzed using flow cytometry. Protein and mRNA expression of apoptotic and inflammatory markers were also evaluated in rat hippocampus. Our results show that arsenic exposure increased total ROS generation and DNA fragmentation, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential alongwith an increase in expression of pro-apoptotic and inflammatory markers. suggesting that EA complementation downregulated total ROS generation dose dependently. Apoptotic markers, BAX and Bcl as well as inflammatory markers, IL-1β, TNFα, INFγ got altered significantly on its administration. Moreover, it also attenuated effects on mitochondrial membrane potential. Based on our findings, EA might substantiate to be a budding therapeutic candidate against arsenic induced neurotoxicity.

Background: DNA methylation plays a crucial role in mammalian development. While methylome changes acquired in the parental genomes are believed to be erased by epigenetic reprogramming, accumulating evidence suggests that methylome changes in sperm caused by environmental factors are involved in the disease phenotypes of the offspring. These findings imply that acquired sperm methylome changes are transferred to the embryo after epigenetic reprogramming.

Arsenocholine-containing methacrylate (MTAsB) inspired by marine organisms was synthesized by the reaction of 2-bromoethyl methacrylate and trimethylarsine to investigate its polymerization behavior and the fundamental properties of the resulting polymer. Controlled radical polymerization of MTAsB proceeded in the presence of a copper catalyst and imidazolium chloride at 60 °C for 8 h to give a water-soluble polycation with a 94% yield. The smaller amount of nonfreezing water and intermediate water of poly(MTAsB) was observed compared with that of the ammonium-containing polycations.

Arsenic in the environment, such as sodium arsenic (NaAsO), is a frequently occurring hazard that has been linked to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Our prior research established the involvement of ferroptosis in arsenic-induced NASH, but the precise underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we found that exposure to NaAsO had a suppressive effect on the expression of CDGSH iron-sulfur domain-containing protein 2 (CISD2) at the protein and gene levels, and overexpression of CISD2 inhibited NaAsO-induced ferroptosis and NASH.

Dietary Compounds in the Prevention of Arsenic Induced Intestinal Toxicity .

J Med Food

Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos (IATA-CSIC), Paterna (Valencia), Spain.

Recent studies show that inorganic arsenic (As) exerts a toxic effect on the intestinal epithelium, causing a significant increase in its permeability. This disruption of the epithelial barrier may favor the entry of contaminants or toxins into the systemic circulation, thus causing toxicity not only at the intestinal level but possibly also at the systemic level. The present study conducts an evaluation of the protective effect of various dietary supplements and plant extracts against the intestinal toxicity of inorganic As.

This study investigated the effects of fine-sized pork bone biochar particles on remediating As-contaminated soil and alleviating associated phytotoxicity to rice in 50-day short-term and 120-day full-life-cycle pot experiments. The addition of micro-nanostructured pork bone biochar (BC) pyrolyzed at 400 and 600 °C (BC400 and BC600) significantly increased the As-treated shoot and root fresh weight by 24.4-77.
