Article Synopsis
  • - The European Health Data Space (EHDS) initiative aims to standardize health data exchange across Europe, focusing on the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format to enhance data interoperability, although its guidelines, particularly the European Patient Summary, may not fully support clinical research in cardiology yet.
  • - This study evaluates the European Patient Summary and HL7 FHIR guidelines to identify gaps that limit their effectiveness for using patient data in AI-driven heart failure management research.
  • - By analyzing two EU-funded projects, DataTools4Heart and AI4HF, the study highlights the need for specific data items and minor adjustments in the existing guidelines to better support secondary use in clinical research and improve personalized healthcare for heart failure patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Advances in technology now allow for patient-centered health data sharing through smartphones and wearables, although many existing Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) systems are not well-integrated with hospital IT systems.
  • The study aimed to create a secure and user-friendly RPM system using widely available devices like the Apple Watch, while also assessing patient acceptance factors.
  • The RPM system was developed through focus groups and tested over 12 months in a study for Dilated Cardiomyopathy, measuring usability and data interaction, with analysis based on various patient demographics.

Associate Professor, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, Portugal.

One approach to enriching the Learning Health System (LHS) is leveraging vital signs and data from wearable technologies. Blood oxygen, heart rate, respiration rates, and other data collected by wearables (like sleep and exercise patterns) can be used to monitor and predict health conditions. This data is already being collected and could be used to improve healthcare in several ways.

Introduction: This paper outlines the design, implementation, and usability study results of the patient empowerment process for chronic disease management, using Patient Reported Outcome Measurements and Shared Decision-Making Processes.

Background: The ADLIFE project aims to develop innovative, digital health solutions to support personalized, integrated care for patients with severe long-term conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and/or Chronic Heart Failure. Successful long-term management of patients with chronic conditions requires active patient self-management and a proactive involvement of patients in their healthcare and treatment.
