Published: May 2018

Here, we report the draft whole-genome sequence of a bacterial strain, sp. strain BS1, isolated from black soil during ethane oxidation culture. Medium- or long-chain alkane oxidation-related genes were identified; however, the short-chain alkane monooxygenase was not detected.

Article Synopsis
  • Bacterial strain Cupriavidus metallidurans BS1 exhibits distinct responses to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and dissolved silver, with higher toxicity from dissolved Ag than from smaller AgNPs.
  • The exposure to silver stress triggers the expression of genes responsible for synthesizing extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which helps the bacteria cope with Ag toxicity by altering their chemical composition.
  • Key resistance genes involved in efflux systems and ATPase production are significantly activated in response to different forms of silver, illustrating how this strain develops varied defenses against silver-based antimicrobial treatments.

Flax fibre reinforced alginate poloxamer hydrogel: assessment of mechanical and 4D printing potential.

Soft Matter

May 2024

Bristol Composites Institute, School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering (CADE), University of Bristol, University Walk, Bristol BS8 1TR, UK.

The mechanical and printing performance of a new biomaterial, flax fibre-reinforced alginate-poloxamer based hydrogel, for load-bearing and 4D printing biomedical applications is described in this study. The-self suspendable ability of the material was evaluated by optimising the printing parameters and conducting a collapse test. 1% of the flax fibre weight fraction was sufficient to obtain an optimum hydrogel composite from a mechanical perspective.

We reported the case of tonsillitis treatment in a 17-years-old boy with use of chemical non-antibiotic preparations, plant derived products and antibiotic benzathine phenoxymethylpenicillin. The antimicrobial agents for treatment were selected on the basis of their activity against a disease agent, the group A β-hemolytic strain Streptococcus pyogenes BS1 isolated from a patient. The bacterium was susceptible in vitro to β-lactams, with largest zones conditioned by penicillin G and benzathine phenoxymethylpenicillin discs, to fluoroquinolones and to cephems, with exception of cefazolin.

Electrochemical Characterization of Two Gut Microbial Strains Cooperatively Promoting Multiple Sclerosis Pathogenesis.

Microorganisms

January 2024

International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics, National Institute for Materials Science, 1-1 Namiki, Tsukuba 305-0044, Ibaraki, Japan.

In this study, we explored the extracellular electron transfer (EET) capabilities of two bacterial strains, OTU0001 and OTU0002, which are demonstrated in biofilm formation in mouse gut and the induction of autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis. OTU0002 displayed significant electrogenic behaviour, producing microbial current on an indium tin-doped oxide electrode surface, particularly in the presence of glucose, with a current density of 60 nA/cm. The presence of cell-surface redox substrate potentially mediating EET was revealed by the redox-based staining method and electrochemical voltammetry assay.

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) have a unique mode of action as antibacterial agents in addition to their anticancer and antioxidant properties. In this study, microbial nanotechnology is employed to synthesize Ag-NPs using the cell filtrate of Streptomyces enissocaesilis BS1. The synthesized Ag-NPs are confirmed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
