Interest in the investigation of mitochondrial dysfunction has seen a resurgence over recent years due to the implication of such dysfunction in both drug-induced toxicity and a variety of disease states. Here we describe a methodology to assist in such investigations whereby the oxygen consumption of isolated mitochondria is assessed in a high-throughput fashion using a phosphorescent oxygen-sensitive probe , standard microtiter plates, and plate reader detection. The protocols provided describe the required isolation procedures, initial assay optimization, and subsequent compound screening. Typical data is also provided illustrating the expected activity levels as well as recommended plate maps and data analysis approaches.

Constipation is correlated with diminished cognitive function, revealing a possible rectum-brain connection. In this counter-balanced crossover trial, 13 elite triathletes underwent a Stroop test to assess cognitive function and executive control. The Stroop test was conducted both with and without magnesium oxide intake, with a 1-week washout period between sessions.

Diabetic retinopathy, a microvascular complication of diabetes, is the leading cause of blindness in adults, but the molecular mechanism of its development remains unclear. Retinal mitochondrial DNA is damaged and hypermethylated, and mtDNA-encoded genes are downregulated. Expression of a long noncoding RNA (larger than 200 nucleotides, which does not translate into proteins), encoded by mtDNA, cytochrome B (Lnc), is also downregulated.

The cardiovascular implications of thyroid disease have been recognized as one of the most characteristic signs that result from the effect of thyroid hormone (TH). Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism produce changes in cardiac contractility, myocardial oxygen consumption, cardiac output, blood pressure, and systemic vascular resistance. The bradyarrhythmias, including atrioventricular block and sick sinus syndrome, are exceedingly rare in hyperthyroidism.

Molecular hydrogen (H2) is considered a biological antioxidant. Hydrogen-rich Water (HRW) is regular water that contains dissolved H2 and has become more widely used in recent years. This review summarizes the basic research and clinical applications of HRW consumption to support its use for daily health and clinical treatment.

Maximal oxygen uptake (VOmax) in healthy subjects is primarily limited by systemic oxygen delivery. In chronic kidney disease (CKD), VOmax is potentially reduced by both central and peripheral factors. We aimed to investigate the effect on VOpeak of adding arm exercise to leg exercise.
