Background/aim: The clinical significance of postoperative neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of postoperative NLR on prediction for postoperative recurrence of gastric cancer.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on data from 170 patients with Stage II/III gastric cancer who underwent surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy using S-1 between 2006 and 2015. Postoperative NLR was calculated every 6 months and the data at the time of recurrence or last survival were used for analysis.

Results: Postoperative NLR was associated with Prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS). In multivariate analysis, we found that elevated CA19-9, CEA and NLR were independent predictive markers. The patients with low values of both NLR and CEA after surgery had the most favorable prognosis.

Conclusion: The postoperative NLR might be one of the surrogate markers for recurrence after curative surgery for patients with Stage II/III gastric cancer.

Background: Complete blood cell count-based ratios (CBRs), including the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), are inflammatory markers associated with postoperative morbidity. Given the link between the surgical stress response and complications after total joint arthroplasty (TJA), this study aimed to evaluate whether higher preoperative CBR values predict greater postoperative benefits associated with dexamethasone utilization.

Methods: The Premier Healthcare Database was queried for adult patients who underwent primary, elective total hip or knee arthroplasty (THA or TKA).

Preoperative Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio as a Predictor of Clinical Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Femoral Endarterectomy.

J Clin Med

January 2025

Division of Vascular Surgery, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Institute of Science Tokyo, 1-5-45 Yushima, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8519, Japan.

This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) undergoing femoral endarterectomy. We performed a retrospective analysis of our institutional data, evaluating consecutive patients with PAD who underwent femoral endarterectomy between January 2013 and March 2023. The main objective was to assess the prognostic value of preoperative NLR for 5-year mortality.

Usefulness of Serum Biomarkers in Predicting Anastomotic Leakage After Gastrectomy.

Cancers (Basel)

January 2025

Biomedical Research Group on Biomaterials and Wound Healing (Ciber-BBN), Traslational Research and Innovation in General and Digestive Surgery (Idipaz), 28046 Madrid, Spain.

Background/objectives: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most concerning complications following gastrectomy. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the predictive accuracy of C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), fibrinogen, and the mean platelet volume (MPV) in the early diagnosis of post-gastrectomy AL.

Methods: A prospective bicentric observational study was conducted including all patients undergoing elective gastrectomy between August 2018 and December 2022.

Background: Hypnosis sedation has recently been used for anesthesia in breast oncologic surgery.

Methods: Between January 2017 and October 2019, 284 patients from our Breast Clinic (Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc, Université Catholique de Louvain) and from the Jolimont Hospital were prospectively included in an interventional non-randomized study approved by our two local ethics committees and registered on clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03330117).

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic impact of the inflammatory burden index (IBI), a novel inflammation-based biomarker, in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) after hepatic resection.

Patients And Methods: One hundred fifty patients with CRLM who underwent hepatectomy were retrospectively analyzed. The IBI was defined as C-reactive protein × neutrophil count/lymphocyte count.
