The influence of photoinduced isomerization on the enantiomeric separation of two newly synthesized liquid crystalline materials, liquid crystals 1 and 2, was studied by high-performance liquid chromatography on a chiral stationary phase Chiralpack AD-3. Both materials have one chiral center and one diazene moiety. The compounds were separated into their E and Z isomeric forms. The conditions and time scale of the ultraviolet-induced E to Z transition were briefly evaluated. Under the optimized conditions, we were able to baseline separate the S and R enantiomers of both the studied materials in their E isomeric form. The chiral separation of liquid crystal 2 after ultraviolet irradiation was unsuccessful. In contrast, the chiral separation of liquid crystal 1 possessing a similar structure to liquid crystal 2 provided baseline separation in its Z isomeric form as well. Previously, we have shown the influence of photoinduced isomerization and its utilization in the enantioseparation on relatively simple molecules. Here, we demonstrate that (1) much more complex compounds can also be successfully separated despite the bulkiness of the achiral part of the structure and (2) photoinduced isomerization even for such complex molecules still strongly influences their chromatographic properties.

Photoswitches are widely investigated molecules because upon exposure to selected light irradiation, they are able to undergo structural, and hence optical, changes. To fully exploit their responsiveness to irradiation, the quantum efficiency of the forward and back reactions is a fundamental parameter, whose accurate determination is critical. In this work, the spectral evolution of a biomimetic switch, which undergoes / photoinduced isomerization, is spectrophotometrically examined.

Photoinduced Reductive C-O Couplings from Unsymmetrical Bis-Cyclometalated Pt(IV) Dicarboxylato Complexes.

Unsymmetrical bis-cyclometalated dicarboxylato complexes (-6-32)-[Pt(tpy)(OCR)] [tpy = cyclometalated 2-(-tolyl)pyridine, R = -Bu (), Me (), Ph (), CF ()], are obtained from the reaction of -[Pt(tpy)] with the appropriate PhI(OCR) reagent. Treatment of complexes of this type with different carboxylates (R'CO) results in the formation of mixed-carboxylato derivatives, namely (-6-43)-[Pt(tpy)(OCMe)(OCR')] [R' = -Bu (), CF (), Ph ()], (-6-34)-[Pt(tpy)(OCCF)(OCR')] [R' = -Bu (), Me (), Ph ()], and (-6-34)-[Pt(tpy)(OC--Bu)(OCMe)] (). Irradiation of - and - with UV light (365 nm) in MeCN gives 5-methyl-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl pivalate (), 5-methyl-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl acetate () or 5-methyl-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl benzoate () as the major photoproduct from most complexes, resulting from a reductive C-O coupling between a tpy ligand and a carboxylato ligand.

Layer-number-dependent photoswitchability in 2D MoS-diarylethene hybrids.

Nanoscale

December 2024

School of Mechanical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907, USA.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS) is a notable two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) with properties ideal for nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. With growing interest in the material, it is critical to understand its layer-number-dependent properties and develop strategies for controlling them. Here, we demonstrate a photo-modulation of MoS flakes and elucidate layer-number-dependent charge transfer behaviors.

A site-selective functionalization of a C(sp)-H bond was achieved in the presence of an intrinsically more reactive C(sp)-H bond by controlling the orientation of a directing group via a photo-induced E/Z isomerization of an oxime ether. By combining E/Z isomerization and an electron deficient Cp*Ir(III) catalyst, the scope of oxime ethers in C(sp)-H functionalization was successfully expanded. Based on this strategy, the order of C-H activation was switchable and successive C(sp)-H/C(sp)-H and C(sp)-H/C(sp)-H double functionalizations were accomplished to construct densely functionalized structures.

We report results of a theoretical study on photoinduced processes in 2-styrylpyridine. The geometries and the relative energies of the possible conformers were investigated using the second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) and algebraic diagrammatic construction to second-order (ADC(2)) methods and the cc-pVTZ basis set. The complete active space self consistent field (CASSCF) method is used for locating the minimum-energy conical intersection (MECI) geometries between the S and S states.
