Despite predictions of their widespread application in healthcare and environmental monitoring, electrochemical sensors are yet to be distributed at scale, instead remaining largely confined to R&D labs. This contrasts sharply with the situation for physical sensors, which are now ubiquitous and seamlessly embedded in the mature ecosystem provided by electronics and connectivity protocols. Although chemical sensors could be integrated into the same ecosystem, there are fundamental issues with these sensors in the three key areas of analytical performance, usability, and affordability. Nevertheless, advances are being made in each of these fields, leading to hope that the deployment of automated and user-friendly low-cost electrochemical sensors is on the horizon. Here, we present a brief survey of key challenges and advances in the development of distributed electrochemical sensors for liquid samples, geared towards applications in healthcare and wellbeing, environmental monitoring, and homeland security. As will be seen, in many cases the analytical performance of the sensor is acceptable; it is usability that is the major barrier to commercial viability at this moment. Were this to be overcome, the issue of affordability could be addressed. Graphical Abstract ᅟ.

In recent years, the fabrication of hydrazine sensors has received extensive attention because of the toxicity of hydrazine to the environment and human beings. It is thus important to design and develop efficient electrode modifiers for the construction of hydrazine electrochemical sensors. Herein, we reported the benign synthesis of a silver (Ag)-doped zinc-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8).

In this research, the preparation of copper cobaltite (CuCoO) nanorods and its potential application in photoelectrochemical sensing platform towards ultrasensitive detection of furazolidone are reported. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy have been performed to confirm the formation, morphology, phase composition, and optical properties of CuCoO synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The electrochemical characteristic parameters were calculated electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and chronoamperometry techniques in the absence and presence of laser light irradiation.

A cost-effective strategy is reported utilizing ionic liquid (IL), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bisulfate ([HMIM] HSO), to delaminate TiC MXene, thereby enhancing its efficiency in electrocatalyzing tryptophan (Trp) oxidation. The positively charged IL effectively intercalates within the negatively charged MXene layers, fostering structural stability through π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions. Consequently, the resulting IL-TiC composite not only maintained the inherent electronic conductivity of TiC but also significantly augmented its electrocatalytic prowess.

This study introduces the development of a highly sensitive label-free electrochemical immunosensor specifically designed to detect prostate-specific antigen (PSA). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) coated with Au nanoparticles/polyhedral hollow CoCu bimetallic sulfide (CuCoS) was employed as a sensing interface for the fixation of the monoclonal anti-PSA antibody. The nanoarchitectures enhanced the capacity for loading prostate-specific antibodies (Ab) and effectually boosted electrical conductivity leading to enhance the electrochemical signal and greater sensitivity for the detection of PSA.

Unregulated discharge of antibiotics in waterbodies has posed significant threat to the aquatic flora and fauna in post-pandemic times. This alarming situation has ascertained the need for suitable sensors to detect persistent antibiotic residues. In this context, functional hybrid materials centralized on reticular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/composites have been a research hot spot for photoelectrochemical host-guest recognition events over the past two decades.
