Thirty-eight non-functioning pituitary adenomas were ultrastructurally investigated with particular attention to the Folliculo-Stellate (FS) cells. A large number of FS cells were found in four cases, one of which disclosed a new type of intercellular junction between FS cells and surrounding adenoma cells. These junctions were characterized by 1) the presence of plasmalemmal attachment plaques only in FS cells, 2) the cytoplasmic filaments assembling in parallel to the attachment plaques, 3) the parallel plasma membranes being separated by the intercellular amorphous material and 4) the intercellular space of approximately 25 nm width. They were similar to hemidesmosomes, but were quite different from hemidesmosome-like intercellular specializations which have been described in the normal meninges and human meningiomas. Accordingly, we designated these new junctions as "hemidesmosomal junctions" which appeared to be one of the ultrastructural features characterizing FS cells.

Purpose: Traumatic corneal abrasion (TCA) causes damage to both corneal epithelium and the underlying hemidesmosomal junctions. Delayed recovery of hemidesmosomal junctions causes symptomatic episodes. However, there is no recommended treatment for recovery of hemidesmosomal junctions, indicating that a blank period exists in TCA treatment.

In this study, we demonstrate the use of a genome-wide association mapping together with RNA-seq in a reduced number of samples, as an efficient approach to detect the causal mutation for a Mendelian disease. Junctional epidermolysis bullosa is a recessive genodermatosis that manifests with neonatal mechanical fragility of the skin, blistering confined to the lamina lucida of the basement membrane and severe alteration of the hemidesmosomal junctions. In Spanish Churra sheep, junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB) has been detected in two commercial flocks.

Unlabelled: Colorectal cancer metastasis is a major cause of mortality worldwide, which may only be controlled with novel methods limiting tumor dissemination and chemoresistance. High stathmin-1 (STMN1) expression was previously established as a hallmark of colorectal cancer progression and predictor of poor survival; however, the mechanism of action is less clear. This work demonstrates that STMN1 silencing arrests tumor-disseminative cascades by inhibiting multiple metastatic drivers, and repressing oncogenic and mesenchymal transcription.

Confocal laser scanning microscopy of hamster cerebellar granular layer showed in montages of z-series the presence of small, medium and large granule cells. A granule cell Golgi cell ratio of 50/4 was observed surrounding glomerular regions. Field emission high resolution scanning electron microscopy of mouse cerebellar granular and molecular layers showed SE-I images of the outer and inner surfaces of nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments of chromium coated granule cells and the axo-spinodendritic synapses of parallel fibers with Purkinje cell dendrites.
