Bayesian surprise intensifies pain in a novel visual-noxious association.

Pain perception is not solely determined by noxious stimuli, but also varies due to other factors, such as beliefs about pain and its uncertainty. A widely accepted theory posits that the brain integrates prediction of pain with noxious stimuli, to estimate pain intensity. This theory assumes that the estimated pain value is adjusted to minimize surprise, mathematically defined as errors between predictions and outcomes.

Cortical spreading depolarization (CSD), the neurophysiological event believed to underlie aura, may trigger migraine headaches through inflammatory signaling that originates in neurons and spreads to the meninges via astrocytes. Increasing evidence from studies on rodents and migraine patients supports this hypothesis. The transition from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory mechanisms is crucial for resolving inflammation.

Background: There is a critical time window of post-stroke neuroplasticity when spontaneous behavioral recovery occurs. Potential factors responsible for this heightened plasticity are the reduction of parvalbumin-immunoreactive (PV+) interneuron inhibitory signaling and the disappearance of extracellular matrix synaptic stabilizers called perineuronal net(s; PNN/PNNs).

Objective: This study investigated whether behavioral recovery during this critical period following stroke is associated with changes in densities of PV+ interneurons and PNNs.

Background: Few population-based studies have assessed sex differences in stroke recurrence. In addition, contributors to sex differences in recurrence and poststroke mortality, including social factors, are unclear. We investigated sex differences in these outcomes and the contribution of social, clinical, and behavioral factors to the sex differences.

Hydrocephalus in primary brainstem hemorrhage risk predictors and management.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, The First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, No.79 Qingchun Road, Hangzhou, 310003, Zhejiang Province, China.

This study explored the risk factors associated with hydrocephalus incidence and evaluated the effectiveness of surgical treatments in managing this condition. Patients with PBSH were retrospectively evaluated, identifying clinical and radiological characteristics. A multivariate logistic regression model was used for analyses.
