Sensory experience during development has lasting effects on perception and neural processing. Exposing juvenile animals to artificial stimuli influences the tuning and functional organization of the auditory cortex, but less is known about how the rich acoustical environments experienced by vocal communicators affect the processing of complex vocalizations. Here, we show that in zebra finches (), a colonial-breeding songbird species, exposure to a naturalistic social-acoustical environment during development has a profound impact on auditory perceptual behavior and on cortical-level auditory responses to conspecific song.

The accumulation of a disease-specific isoform of prion protein (PrP) and histopathological lesions, such as neuronal loss, are unevenly distributed in the brains of humans and animals affected with prion diseases. This distribution varies depending on the diseases and/or the combinations of prion strain and experimental animal. The brain region-dependent distribution of PrP and neuropathological lesions suggests a neuronal cell-type-dependent prion propagation and vulnerability to prion infection.

Targeted Recombination in Active Populations (TRAP) represents an effective and extensively applied technique that has earned significant utilization in neuroscience over the past decade, primarily for identifying and modulating functionally activated neuronal ensembles associated with diverse behaviors. As epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by pathological hyper-excitatory networks, TRAP has already been widely applied in epilepsy research. However, the deployment of TRAP in this field remains underexplored, and there is significant potential for further application and development in epilepsy-related investigations.

Estrogens and progesterone can have rapid effects on neuronal function and can modify the use of spatial navigation strategies dependent upon the prefrontal cortex, striatum, and hippocampus. Here, we assessed the effects of 17β-estradiol (E2), progesterone, and its metabolite allopregnanolone, on evoked excitatory postsynaptic potentials in the infralimbic region of the female rat prefrontal cortex. Field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSPs) evoked by stimulation of layer I were first characterized by recording responses at multiple depths between the cortical surface and the underlying white matter.
