We describe the comparative study of optical and electrochemical properties of tetracyanobutadienes (TCBDs) and dicyanoquinodimethanes (DCNQs) with a 2-methyl-1-azulenyl group and their derivatives with a 1-azulenyl substituent examined under the same conditions. TCBDs and DCNQs with a 2-methyl-1-azulenyl substituent have been prepared by the Sonogashira-Hagihara alkynylation of the 2-methyl-1-iodoazulene with arylalkyne derivatives, followed by the formal [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) reaction with tetracyanoethylene and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane. The optical properties of the TCBDs and DCNQs with a 2-methyl-1-azulenyl group were investigated through the comparison with those of TCBDs and DCNQs with a 1-azulenyl substituent by employing the UV/vis spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The electrochemical properties of the TCBD and DCNQ derivatives were also examined by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry experiments, which elucidated their multistep redox properties. Furthermore, noticeable spectral changes of these chromophores were identified by the spectroelectrochemical measurements.

A label-free, flexible, and disposable aptasensor was designed for the rapid on-site detection of vancomycin (VAN) levels. The electrochemical sensor was based on lab-printed carbon electrodes (C-PE) enriched with cauliflower-shaped gold nanostructures (AuNSs), on which VAN-specific aptamers were immobilized as biorecognition elements and short-chain thiols as blocking agents. The AuNSs, characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), enhanced the electrochemical properties of the platform and the aptamer immobilization active sites.

Background: Estriol (E3) is a common estrogen responsible for regulating the female reproductive system, but excessive amount can pose health risks to humans and wild life. Therefore, sensitive and accurate detection of estriol level is crucial. A novel competitive ECL immunosensor based on a dual signal amplification strategy of AuNPs@GO@SmMoSe and Gd(MoO) was fabricated for ultrasensitive detection of estriol.

Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are a significant component of electronic waste (e-waste) and are among the fastest-generating waste flows. The potentially negative impacts caused by e-waste on the environment and human health pose an increasingly apparent threat to people's everyday lives and well-being. The nonmetallic fraction (predominantly carbon) of WPCBs is characterized by heavy weight, low resource value, and complex composition, and these characteristics significantly restrict the recycling of the WPCBs to achieve a circular economy.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has great potential for laboratory blood tests. The overall aim of this study is to develop a microfluidic sensor for determining the physical properties and hematological parameters of blood based on its dielectric spectra. Impedance was measured in flowing blood to prevent aggregation and sedimentation at frequencies between 40 Hz and 110 MHz.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic compounds resulting from incomplete burning of organic materials. This work describes the successful layer-by-layer fabrication of a novel zinc oxide nanocomposite made of zinc oxide nanoparticles, aniline, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes on a stainless steel wire by electrodeposition. The coating and extraction conditions were screened, optimized, and validated using factorial design and central composite design, respectively.
