Methylmercury (MeHg) is a highly toxic environmental pollutant which binds with a high affinity to selenol groups. In view of this, seleno-compounds have been investigated as MeHg antidotes. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the co-exposure to MeHg and the seleno-compound diphenyl diselenide (PhSe) on Drosophila melanogaster. We measured the survival rate, developmental survival, locomotor ability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and Hg levels in D. melanogaster exposed to MeHg and/or (PhSe) in the food. Exposure to MeHg caused a reduction in the survival rate, developmental survival, and locomotion in D. melanogaster. In addition, MeHg increased the ROS production and mercury levels in flies. The co-exposure to MeHg and (PhSe) did not prevent the toxic effects of MeHg in D. melanogaster. On the contrary, the co-exposure enhanced the toxic effects on the locomotor ability and developmental survival. This effect may be explained by the fact that the co-exposure increased the Hg levels in body when compared to flies exposed only to MeHg, suggesting that MeHg and (PhSe) interaction may increase Hg body burden in D. melanogaster which could contribute for the increased toxicity observed in the co-exposure.

Purpose: Developmentally regulated GTP-binding protein 2 (DRG2) regulates microtubule dynamics and G2/M arrest during docetaxel treatment. Poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) acts as an important repair system for DNA damage caused by docetaxel treatment. This study investigated whether DRG2 expression affects response to PARP inhibitors (olaparib) using prostate cancer cell lines PC3, DU145, LNCaP-FGC, and LNCaP-LN3.

Human milk extracellular vesicles (EVs) are crucial mother-to-baby messengers that transfer biological signals. These EVs are reported to survive digestion and transport across the intestine. The mechanisms of interaction between human milk EVs and the intestinal mucosa, including epithelial uptake remain unclear.

Background: Metabolism is error prone. For instance, the reduced forms of the central metabolic cofactors nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), can be converted into redox-inactive products, NADHX and NADPHX, through enzymatically catalyzed or spontaneous hydration. The metabolite repair enzymes NAXD and NAXE convert these damaged compounds back to the functional NAD(P)H cofactors.

Objective: Large-scale mortality trials require reliable secondary assessments of impairment. We compared the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3), a screening tool self-administered by parents, in classifying impairment using the 'gold standard' Bayley Scales of Infant Development (Bayley-III), a diagnostic tool administered by trained assessors.
Design: Analysis of 405 children around 2 years corrected age from the Australian Placental Transfusion Study, a trial conducted over 8 years.

Background: In recent years, cancer survival rates have increased exponentially. However, this rise in survival comes with a significant drawback. As the number of treatment lines has grown, so too have the side effects, which can severely impact patients' functionality and quality of life.
