Dichroic X-ray signals derived from the Borrmann effect and a twisted photon beam with topological charge l = 1 are formulated with an effective wavevector. The unification applies for non-magnetic and magnetic materials. Electronic degrees of freedom associated with an ion are encapsulated in multipoles previously used to interpret conventional dichroism and Bragg diffraction enhanced by an atomic resonance. A dichroic signal exploiting the Borrmann effect with a linearly polarized beam presents charge-like multipoles that include a hexadecapole. A difference between dichroic signals obtained with a twisted beam carrying spin polarization (circular polarization) and opposite winding numbers presents charge-like atomic multipoles, whereas a twisted beam carrying linear polarization alone presents magnetic (time-odd) multipoles. Charge-like multipoles include a quadrupole, and magnetic multipoles include a dipole and an octupole. We discuss the practicalities and relative merits of spectroscopy exploiting the two remarkably closely-related processes. Signals using beams with topological charges l ≥ 2 present additional atomic multipoles.

Mechanisms of anion permeation within ion channels and nanopores remain poorly understood. Recent cryo-electron microscopy structures of the human bestrophin 1 Cl channel (hBest1) provide an opportunity to evaluate ion interactions predicted by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations against experimental observations. Here, we implement the fully polarizable force field AMOEBA in MD simulations on different conformations of hBest1.

We present a new perturbative full-shape analysis of BOSS galaxy clustering data, including the full combination of the galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum multipoles, baryon acoustic oscillations, and cross-correlations with the gravitational lensing of cosmic microwave background measured from Planck. Assuming the ΛCDM model, we constrain the matter density fraction Ω_{m}=0.3138±0.

The efficient design of novel enzymes has been attainable only by a combination of theoretical approaches and experimental refinement, suggesting inadequate performance of de novo design protocols. Based on the analysis of the evolutionary trajectory of a designed organophosphate hydrolase, this work aimed at developing and validating the improved theoretical models describing the catalytic activity of five enzyme variants (including wild-type as well as theoretically derived and experimentally refined enzymes) performing the hydrolysis of diethyl 7-hydroxycoumarinyl phosphate. The following aspects possibly important for enzyme design were addressed: the level of theory sufficient for a reliable description of enzyme-reactant interactions, the issue of ground state (GS) destabilization versus transition state (TS) stabilization, and the derivation of the proper side chain rotamers of amino acid residues.

Microlens array (MLA), through which all the sub-beams are focused, is widely used in multi-electron-beam systems. In this work, based on the differential algebraic (DA) method, we propose an approach in calculating the high-order aberrations for both axial and off-axial microlenses, considering the multipole fields that are introduced by the neighborhood structures in MLA, as well as the rotationally symmetric field. To perform the DA calculation, the electric fields of the microlenses are analyzed by using the azimuthal Fourier analysis and the Fourier-Bessel series Expansion.

Naturally occurring cellulose Iβ with its characteristic parallel orientation of cellulose chains is less stable than cellulose II, in which neighboring pairs of chains are oriented antiparallel to each other. While the distinct hydrogen-bond patterns of these two cellulose crystal forms are well established, the energetic role of the hydrogen bonds for crystal stability, in comparison to the van der Waals (vdW) and overall electrostatic interactions in the crystals, is a matter of current debate. In this article, we investigate the relative stability of celluloses Iβ and II in energy minimizations with classical force fields.
