The competence for appreciating beauty appears to be a human universal trait. This fact points out to a phylogenetically derived capacity that, somehow, evolved by means of natural selection. To detail how this evolutionary process took place is difficult to determine, because appreciating beauty is an elusive capacity, impossible to be detected in the fossil record. However, efforts have been made to understand the main characteristics of such competence, particularly by means of the advances of neuroaesthetics. Here, we examine some of the results obtained in experimental research to identify neural correlations of the appreciation of beauty, as well as archaeological and paleoanthropological proofs of the relationship existing between production of artistic objects and evolution of the human brain.

Why Cosmetic Surgery is Prevalent in Korea: A Perspective Grounded in Basic Values.

J Craniofac Surg

Department of Plastic Surgery, Armed Forces Capital Hospital, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-City, Gyeonggi-do, and Department of Anatomy, College of Medicine, Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

The aim of this review is to explore the reasons behind the prevalence of cosmetic surgery in Korea from the viewpoint of "basic values." In societies characterized by high levels of prejudice, the hierarchy of values from highest to lowest is as follows: (1) political, (2) economic, (3) religious, (4) social, (5) theoretical, and (6) aesthetic. Conversely, in societies with low levels of prejudice, the ranking of values from highest to lowest is: (1) aesthetic, (2) social, (3) religious, (4) theoretical, (5) economic, and (6) political.

Scientific interest in body modifications continues to grow, and tattoos have recently become a subject of empirical aesthetics. While conceptual structures of tattoo aesthetics have been studied, the question of how tattoos are aesthetically appreciated has not yet been studied. In this study, we examined how tattoos influence the aesthetic appreciation of human stimuli and uncovered differences in beauty perceived by individuals older and younger than 50, which we consider indicative of different internalized social norms, experts (tattoo artists) and nonexperts, and tattooed and nontattooed individuals.

Owned dogs are often regarded as family members, best friends, or even as substitutes for children. These new roles and their effects on human well-being have received scientific attention, but little is known about how attributing such social functions to dogs might influence the caring behaviour of the owner, which in turn can impact canine welfare. Our online survey of Hungarian dog owners (N = 790) aimed to describe what owners appreciate the most and the least in their dogs and to investigate the relationship between the social and non-social functions of the dog, the characteristics of the owner and the dog, the management practices of the owner, as well as the dog's behaviour, including behaviour problems.

Description This evocative artwork is inspired by the inner workings of the human body, specifically the complexities of blood flow and vascular systems. The deep reds and dynamic patterns represent the movement of blood through arteries and veins, while the interplay of lighter hues evokes the diffusion of oxygen and nutrients. This abstract interpretation aims to capture the vibrancy and essential functions of circulatory processes, celebrating the unseen yet vital life force that sustains us.
