The role that van der Waals (vdW) attractive forces play in the hydration and association of atomic hydrophobic solutes such as argon (Ar) in water is reanalyzed using the local molecular field (LMF) theory of those interactions. In this problem, solute vdW attractive forces can reduce or mask hydrophobic interactions as measured by contact peak heights of the ArAr correlation function compared to reference results for purely repulsive core solutes. Nevertheless, both systems exhibit a characteristic hydrophobic inverse temperature behavior in which hydrophobic association becomes stronger with increasing temperature through a moderate temperature range. The new theoretical approximation obtained here is remarkably simple and faithful to the statistical mechanical LMF assessment of the necessary force balance. Our results extend and significantly revise approximations made in a recent application of the LMF approach to this problem and, unexpectedly, support a theory of nearly 40 years ago.

The aim of this study is to analyze the role played by the appearance of female ghosts in their redemption. In the literature on ghosts, entries on female ghosts highlight their "beautiful appearance": Arang (Korean), Otsuyu (Japanese), The White Lady (Europe), Nie Xiaoqian (Chinese), and Maria Makiling (Filipino). Ghosts are women who died tragically, leaving behind unfulfilled desires-particularly those related to romantic or societal expectations such as marriage, love, and motherhood.

Engine deposits can reduce performance and increase emissions, particularly for modern direct-injection fuel delivery systems. Surfactants known as deposit control additives (DCAs) adsorb and self-assemble on the surface of deposit precursors to keep them suspended in the fuel. The microbubble is formed by partial filling of an ethanol-water mixture in the microcavity that is spliced to the end face of a single-mode fiber. Due to different surface tension of ethanol and water, the uneven temperature gradient induced by a laser causes the non-uniform distribution of ethanol-water molecules on the bubble surface.
