December 2024

Sanatorio de la Trinidad Mitre, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Background: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are abnormal communications between dural arteries and cortical, meningeal, or dural sinus veins. They represent 10-15% of intracranial arteriovenous malformations. In rare cases, they have been associated with potentially reversible cognitive impairment and dementia.

Synthesis and characterization of allomelanin model from 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene autooxidation.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, Department of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Jagiellonian University, Gronostajowa 7, 30-387, Kraków, Poland.

In this work a novel method for synthesis of 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene melanin was presented, as well as the physicochemical properties, molecular structure, and characteristics of the pigment. The proposed synthesis protocol is simple and cost-effective with no enzymes or catalysts needed. The final product is not adsorbed on any surface, since the pigment is the result of autooxidation of 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene.

Unusual Causes of Death Due to Constipation.

December 2024

Forensic Pathology Unit, Royal Darwin Hospital, Darwin, Northern Territory and College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.

Constipation is found in individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and cerebral palsy. Although generally a benign condition, it may lead to life-threatening intestinal obstruction, with or without volvulus, or to stercoral ulceration with enteritis and/or perforation. Two unusual cases of lethal chronic constipation are reported to demonstrate other very rare fatal mechanisms that may occur.

Involvement of the Ipsilateral Tongue, an Intraoral Structure of Referred Pain due to Entrapment of the Greater Occipital Nerve.

Case Rep Neurol Med

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

This study reports a rare case of referred pain in the trigeminal nerve distribution caused by entrapment of the greater occipital nerve (GON). Notably, the pain extended to the ipsilateral tongue, an unusual intraoral involvement. GON entrapment can lead to sensitization in secondary nociceptive neurons within the trigeminocervical complex (TCC), which receives signals from both trigeminal and occipital nerves, causing referred facial pain.

Reel's syndrome (RS) is an unusual cause of pacemaker lead dislodgement. We present the case of a 59-year-old female patient with Down syndrome (DS) implanted with a dual-chamber endovascular pacemaker due to symptomatic sinus node disfunction, reporting several syncopal episodes in last days and showing abnormal electrical parameters at the 2-months follow-up due to RS. The malfunctioning device was removed and an endocardial leadless pacing system was implanted.
