We consider the Brownian motion of a collection of particles each with an additional degree of freedom. The degree of freedom of a particle (or, in general, a molecule) can assume distinct values corresponding to certain states or conformations. The time evolution of the additional degree of freedom of a particle is guided by those of its neighbors as well as the temperature of the system. We show that the local averaging over these degrees of freedom results in emergence of a collective order in the dynamics in the form of selection or dominance of one of the isomers leading to a symmetry-broken state. Our statistical model captures the basic features of homochirality, e.g., autocatalysis and chiral inhibition.

Bioinspired shape-morphing soft magnetic actuators have potential applications in medicine, robotics, and engineering due to their soft body, untethered control, and infinite degrees of freedom. The shape programming of the soft magnetic actuators (consisting of soft ferromagnetic CI particles in a soft matrix) is an involved task, as it requires a moulding process severely limiting the capability to program complex shapes. The current study explores a shape programming technique that architects the particle pattern configuration in the actuator, mimicking the pattern found in the mould-programmed actuator, thereby eliminating the need for a mould and providing a greater capability of programming complex shapes.

In the pursuit of more sustainable diets, researchers have been studying ways to promote a transition from animal- to plant-based meals in foodservice contexts by influencing participants' conscious choices through names, labels, claims, and information. This critical review found that these interventions usually mobilize only those already engaged in reducing the consumption of animal products and often only during the intervention period, failing to influence those who eat most meat or to create long-lasting effects. Analyzing the choice for vegetarian meals against meals with meat in recently published studies conducted in foodservice contexts, we argue that the transition to more sustainable diets should rely less on consumers' willpower and more on public policies and institutional measures that change the availability, price, and visibility of plant-based meals.
